Washington Street is the Spine of downtown. A path was here long before namesake Washington was born as this stretch of road was what connected the isthmus of Boston to the mainland of Roxbury. What we now call Washington Street is really a collection of several roads joined together over the centuries, such as Orange, Newbury, and Marlborough. (Two of which found their places back on the map in the Back Bay!) This area to my left is known as the Ladder Blocks, as all the connecting streets are like a wrung of a ladder. Collectively they form a rare 19th-century commercial streetscape. Even more rare is that this section of Boston was spared from the Great Boston Fire of 1872, giving a glimpse of shopfronts experienced by centuries of window shoppers. Roaming this part of the city really shows that Boston’s historic streetscapes are one of its greatest assets. Be sure to follow for more of Boston’s architectural history and let me know what street I should feature next! History of downtown Boston.
Washington Street is the spine of Boston! One previous name for this stretch of pavement was Orange St. Some say this is where the Orange line train got its name. Before this became a commercial hub, it was largely a residential neighborhood. Several of these old grand homes still exist on the many connecting streets between Washington and Tremont. Many residents left for the newly built and highly fashionable Back Bay. I feel downtown is about to have another renaissance as residents continue to move back to the neighborhood. (Single use zoning is so last century…) #boston History of downtown Boston
