Dr. James A. Duke was one of the most respected botanists in the world. He spent decades working as a botanist for the USDA, researching medicinal plants and building what eventually became the Phytochemical Database, one of the largest scientific collections of plant compounds ever assembled. He published hundreds of papers and books on medicinal plants. But one of the most fascinating lectures he ever gave happened during the @schoolofnaturalhealing Pharmacognosy tapes recorded in the late 80s. In that lecture, he described a simple but striking experiment. Researchers were working with human brain tissue cultures that he jokingly referred to as “brain soup.” Into this brain tissue they injected extracts of several herbs from the mint family. 🌿 Rosemary 🌱 Sage 🍋 Lemon balm What they observed was remarkable. These herbs appeared to slow the breakdown of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter involved in memory and learning that is often reduced in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Duke joked that if he were designing an “Alzheimer’s shampoo,” it would contain all three herbs. He also mentioned another plant from his garden that was backed by studies for brain health: 🌿 Ginkgo This kind of thinking is something I grew up around.
