✨BOTTLE REFUSAL ✨
A breastfed baby refusing a bottle is stressful. Mom might be headed back to work. Or just need a break for some bodily space. Partners want to feed and bond in that way.
Whatever the reason for bottles being needed, if baby refuses it’s HARD.
What can you do? (Besides work with a pro 🙋🏼♀️)
Practice!
✨ Baby is not hungry
✨ Bottle nipple and cap only
✨ Let baby touch, play, get familiar
✨ Make it low key pressure
✨ Lay nipple on across top lip
✨ Touch baby’s chin to trigger that wide open mouth (gape)
✨ Point nipple to roof of mouth
✨ Work towards latching and sucking
✨ Add milk in tiny volumes to practice
✨ Master this happily before adding bottle

🍼 If they’re hungry enough, they will take a bottle? MYTH BUSTED! 🚫
As a pediatric feeding specialist, here are the REAL reasons babies refuse bottles (and it’s not about hunger!) 👇
1️⃣ Poor oral motor coordination - some babies genuinely struggle with the mechanics! 💪
2️⃣ Motivation matters - babies are smart and know what they prefer 🧠
3️⃣ Association is powerful - they connect mom with breastfeeding only 🤱
4️⃣ Trauma response - past negative experiences stick with them 😰
5️⃣ Sensory sensitivities - different textures, temperatures, tastes matter 🌡️
6️⃣ Flow rate frustration - too fast or too slow can cause refusal 💧
7️⃣ Developmental transitions - sometimes timing is everything 📅
8️⃣ Position preferences - comfort and security play a huge role 🛌
9️⃣ Tension- tense body = tense feeding
🔟 Medical issues - reflux, tongue ties, or other conditions may be factors 🩺

Trying to get your breastfed baby to take a bottle?
You’re not alone! Whether you’re heading back to work, want a little more flexibility, or just need a break, there are so many reasons you might want your baby to accept a bottle. 💛
That said, not all babies need a bottle - some will happily go straight from breastfeeding to a cup. But in many situations, a bottle can be really helpful.
I introduced an expressed bottle of milk to my son from 4 weeks old, but my supply was well-established, and I didn’t face any other feeding challenges. Every baby is different, and finding what works best for you and your little one is key!
One of my top tips? You can try both of you taking your clothes off – skin-to-skin contact can help your baby relax and make it easier for them to accept the bottle. But this is just one of many tips I have for you.
Every feeding journey is individual, and we should respect everyone’s decisions and what works best for their family. I’ve put together a super helpful blog with all my top tips to make the transition smoother.

Bottle refusal baby? We can help! Buying a million different bottles and trying for weeks is expensive and exhausting, and often times parents still end up needing professional support with us. Bottle refusal is almost always not actually refusal, but not knowing how to use it. And of course if a baby is hungry and trying to eat, but can’t figure it out, they are going to get upset, cry, and maybe even push it away after so long. A million different bottles won’t teach your baby bottlefeeding skills, especially since different bottles promote different tongue movements 🤯🤯. The parent in this reel bought one bottle based on our recommendation and did some oral exercises based on baby’s specific difficulties. They also didn’t have to pay anything for their consult! Request your consult for bottle refusal using the link in our bio (we check insurance for you!) #bottlerefusal #bottlefeeding #tonguetie #postpartum #maternityleave #sahm #breastfeeding #exclusivelybreastfeeding #drbrowns #evenflo #lansinoh #aventnatural #avent #daycare #pacedfeeding #tonguetie

Does your baby refuse the bottle or seem distressed during feedings? Bottle refusal and bottle aversion often stem from a feeling of being out of control. When feeding becomes stressful, babies may start resisting the bottle altogether.

We saw @janinerosemcneil's video about sudden bottle refusal and we know that she’s not alone in her struggle. 😰
Can you relate? Dr. Meg explains why this happens and what you can do about it. 💜
Bottle refusal is more common than you think, but simple solutions can make a difference. ✨
If bottle refusal persists, don't hesitate to ask your pediatrician for a referral to a pediatric feeding specialist experienced with bottle refusal. Getting the right support can make all the difference. 🍼
Remember: every baby's feeding journey is unique, and you're doing amazing 💪

Bottle feeding is one of the biggest pressure points in early parenting and also one of the least understood.
When things shift, stall, or spiral, parents are often left trying to “push through” without anyone explaining what’s actually happening or how to make it better.
This is where my work sits.
Reading the why beneath the refusal.
Seeing the patterns that teach us where to start the shift
Understanding what your baby can manage, what they’re protecting, and what needs to change for feeding to become calm again.
Families aren’t failing.
Babies aren’t “being difficult.”
Feeding is a system - sensory, motor, emotional, relational and when that system is overwhelmed, bottles fall apart.
And this is a gentle reminder for HCPs too..
How we talk about feeding matters.
How we guide parents, the language we use, the pressure we apply (or remove), the way we frame safety and readiness - it all shapes whether feeding settles… or stays stuck.
My approach is built on one thing:
Protect the feeding relationship first then rebuild it with the right information, the right lens, and the right steps.
If you’re here because bottle feeding has become too much…
If you’re a HCP who wants to elevate their knowledge and skill in how to support families in these moments…
You’re in the right place.

One of my go-to strategies for helping babies overcome bottle refusal is incorporating play!
Hi 👋🏾 I’m Ashli, a Registered Nurse, Lactation and Baby Sleep Expert, sharing evidence-informed baby tips—without all the judgment 🤓
Feeding your baby is personal, and it’s not all or nothing!
Whether you plan to breastfeed and bottle-feed, combo feed breastmilk and formula, or just introduce a bottle for breaks, this simple technique can help make the transition smoother 🩷
Let’s be honest—most babies switch from breast to bottle easily, but some need a little more support.
⭐️ Did you know using an O-ball from @brightstarts paired with a @drbrowns nipple can help? It allows your baby to get used to the feel of a bottle while they play, making bottle-feeding less stressful when the time comes. 🍼
Babies love grasping the O-ball, exploring the nipple in a relaxed, non-feeding environment—helping reduce resistance when it’s time to feed.
