Community outreach and connection were integral to the Breonna Taylor “In the Garden” installation. While the “Homecoming” mural resided in the gallery, it was designed to evoke reflection, conversation, empowerment, and action. With the dedicated efforts of @speedartmuseum staff, educators, and fellow artists, we successfully reached thousands through free art events, gallery talks, artist lectures, public events, and national press coverage. A special thank you and gratitude to @toya_northington, who invited me to co-create the mural with @resko_cma and lead art-making activities, and to Yasmine Bay, who coordinated community connection elements for art-making activities during the duration of installation. Being included in UofL’s @hiteart courses taught by artist @maryanncarothers and graphic designer @ms.squires was an honor. Hite Typography students designed books as part of their class assignment for their book “Civil Rights Tour of Louisville,” which includes the “Homecoming” mural and “In the Garden Installation” as landmarks. To those who visited, opened their hearts, minds and engaged in meaningful dialogues—thank you. Art embodies my attention, passion, and voice. Sharing these elements with others is what I love most.
