@timholt takes us to Buttermere in England’s Lake District, where towering fells, mirror-like waters, and postcard-perfect reflections make it one of the most breathtaking spots in the UK. 🇬🇧 ⛰️ 🍃
Tucked deep within the northwestern Lakes, Buttermere is one of those rare spots that feels untouched, timeless, and completely unspoiled. Framed by dramatic peaks like Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike, the lake offers some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in the UK. Whether you’re here for a gentle lakeside stroll or an all-day mountain hike, this place is made for slowing down and soaking it all in.
⛰️ Things to do around Buttermere:
Buttermere Circular Walk: A 4.5-mile flat trail around the lake, perfect for a peaceful morning walk or golden hour photos.
Fleetwith Pike & Haystacks Hike: A little more challenging, but you’ll be rewarded with sweeping valley views and perfect picnic spots.
Wild swimming & paddle dips: On calm summer mornings, the mirror-like waters are irresistible.
🗓️ Best time to visit:
Spring & summer (April–August): Ideal for hikes, picnics, and long daylight hours
Autumn (September–October): When the surrounding fells turn shades of gold and crimson (one of the most photogenic times of year!)
Winter: Quiet, serene, and often dusted with snow, perfect if you want the lake almost to yourself.
If you had one day in the Lake District, would you spend it here… or is there another hidden gem we need to check out?

One of the most beautiful walks in the Lake District. 🌿🏔️
The Buttermere Circular is proof that you don’t need to summit the highest peaks to experience incredible mountain scenery. Crystal-clear water, dramatic fells, woodland trails, and views around every corner make this one of the UK’s most rewarding hikes.
Whether you’re visiting the Lake District for the first time or returning for another adventure, this circular route is a must-do. It’s the perfect mix of peaceful lakeside paths and unforgettable mountain landscapes.
Sometimes the best adventures aren’t about going further—they’re about slowing down and taking it all in.

Picnic പോകാം 🚘🏝
Buttermere is a stunning lake and small village in the western part of the Lake District, England. Surrounded by high fells such as Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike, and High Stile, it is known for its peaceful atmosphere, dramatic mountain scenery, and one of the most beautiful lakeside walks in Britain.
Highlights
* Crystal-clear lake surrounded by mountains.
* A scenic circular walk around the lake (about 4.5 miles / 7 km).
* Excellent photography and picnic spots.
* Popular starting point for hikes to Haystacks, a favorite fell of Alfred Wainwright.
* Less crowded than some of the more famous Lake District lakes.
❤️ if you need a visit to the gorgeous English Lake District! Took a trip this week to the last of the bluebells at Buttermere (I’m always very early or very late for them!)
We’ve had a heatwave this past week and let me tell you.. I nearly got a tan. Nearly.
Really I just wanted to show that view of the amazing storm cloud after an incredible run of hot weather.
Rain is now forecast but as we say here, “ohh the garden needed it!” 🌧️

SAVE THIS for one of the easiest & prettiest Lake District day outs (suitable for all the family) 🏔️🇬🇧✨ (how lucky are we to have this so close to home?!)
We spent Sunday doing the Buttermere Circular and the views took our breath away! If you’ve got a spare day coming up, I can’t recommend this enough.
It’s a super easy, flat walk around Buttermere Lake, so it’s perfect for dogs, kids, families or anyone who wants the Lake District views without a huge hike.
📍 Buttermere Circular, Lake District
🚗 Around 2 hours 15 mins from Liverpool
🥾 7.5km loop
⏱️ Takes around 2-2.5 hours depending how often you stop for photos
🐶 Dog friendly
👨👩👧 Great for families
🍰 Café stops on the route
🅿️ Parking postcode: CA13 9XA
We parked at Syke Farm Campsite, which I’d really recommend as it’s right between Buttermere and Crummock Water, and they have a lovely café too where you can grab amazing homemade ice cream cream (or a bacon barm before the walk like we did haha!)
From there, you basically follow one big loop around Buttermere Lake. It’s really easy to follow and the views are unreal the whole way round.
Halfway around, you’ll come to Gatesgarth Farm, where there’s also parking and usually a little café/ice cream stop too, so you can start the walk from there if that works better.
You can keep it as a chilled lakeside walk, or if you’re feeling more adventurous there are loads of hikes nearby, we added an extra walk on afterwards to Rannerdale Knotts 🥰
Honestly one of the most beautiful Sunday’s I’ve ever had!
Save this for your next Lake District day trip 🤍
