In 1979, The Sugarhill Gang released “Rapper’s Delight,” a groundbreaking track that brought the energy of early hip-hop to a much wider audience. Produced by Sylvia Robinson, the song turned an emerging underground movement into a commercial breakthrough, introducing millions of listeners to the rhythm, rhymes, and storytelling that would shape the future of popular music. “Rapper’s Delight” reached the US Top 40, climbed to No. 3 in the UK, and topped the charts in Canada. Its influence extended far beyond the charts: the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry in 2011, and it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014. What began as a bold musical experiment became one of hip-hop’s most important milestones. 🎤 Compton’s Most Wanted – Hood Took Me Under 📅 Single release: July 17, 1992 📀 Album: Music to Driveby — September 29, 1992 🎮 If GTA: San Andreas ever made you feel like you were cruising through Los Santos with the radio turned all the way up, this is one of the records that helped create that feeling. Hood Took Me Under is pure early-’90s Compton storytelling, with MC Eiht painting a dark picture of growing up surrounded by gang culture and the consequences that come with it. The track was produced by DJ Mike T and features lyrics and vocals from MC Eiht. It samples Isaac Hayes’ version of “Walk On By,” turning the soulful source material into a much darker West Coast backdrop. (Wikipedia) The song appeared on CMW’s third studio album, Music to Driveby, released on September 29, 1992 through Orpheus and Epic Records. The album became one of the group’s most important releases and reached No. 66 on the Billboard 200. (Wikipedia) And then came 2004: Hood Took Me Under landed on the soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on the fictional Radio Los Santos station. MC Eiht also voiced Ryder, making the connection between the record, Compton culture, and the game’s fictional Los Santos even stronger. (Wikipedia) The single reached No. 5 on the U.S. Hot Rap Songs chart, cementing it as one of CMW’s signature records. (Wikipedia) 🔥 Before Los Santos had a radio station, Compton had already written the soundtrack. #ComptonsMostWanted #HoodTookMeUnder #MCEiht #GTA SanAndreas #WestCoastHipHop
🎤 Compton’s Most Wanted – Hood Took Me Under 🔥 Compton in ’92. Dark beats, real-life storytelling, and MC Eiht putting the reality of his neighborhood into every verse. This is West Coast Hip-Hop with a story to tell. 📅 Release: 1992 💿 Album: Music to Driveby — September 29, 1992 🎛️ Produced by: DJ Mike T 🏷️ Label: Orpheus Records / Epic Records “Hood Took Me Under” stands out for its storytelling. MC Eiht paints a picture of how the environment around you can shape your choices, especially when growing up in a neighborhood where opportunities are limited and pressure comes from every direction. DJ Mike T’s production gives the record a dark, atmospheric sound that perfectly matches the subject matter. Instead of glorifying the struggle, the song shows how easily someone can get caught up in circumstances bigger than themselves. The track also became part of Hip-Hop gaming history when it landed on Radio Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. For players cruising through the streets of Los Santos, hearing this record on the radio made the game’s early-’90s West Coast atmosphere feel even more authentic. 🎮📻 🎧 Real stories. West Coast roots. A classic that lives on through both Hip-Hop and gaming culture. #ComptonsMostWanted #HoodTookMeUnder #MCEiht #WestCoastHipHop #90sHipHop
Legendary blastmaster KRS-One drops an incredible verse chronicling the history of hip-hop from 1973 through 1986. This dope performance, spit over the classic…”Classic” instrumental from DJ Premier and Rick Ruben, comes courtesy of the National Hip-Hop Museum (@nationalhiphopmuseum) 4/4/24 Grand Induction ceremony. No conversation about greatest MCs of all time is complete without KRS. In addition to being a top-notch lyricist (and one of the finest freestylers of all time) he exhibits one of the greatest stage presences in all of music. Whether you define M.C. as master of ceremonies, microphone commander or mic controller, the Teacha does it all superbly. His discography, both as a solo artist and as the leader of BDP, speaks for itself. Perhaps most notable amongst his accomplishments is his passionate, four decades-spanning commitment to the positive advancement of hip-hop as a culture and spiritual movement. He remains one of its chief evangelists, staunchest guardians, and wisest educators. 🫡 #KRSOne #BoogieDownProductions #NationalHipHopMuseum

The version most people know was not how “Still Ballin’” originally sounded 👀 Before the song appeared on “Better Dayz,” an earlier version had been recorded with Kurupt over production from Johnny “J.” That version was never officially released. For the 2002 album, the record was reworked as “Still Ballin’ (Nitty Remix),” with Trick Daddy added as the featured artist. “Still Ballin’” sits directly after the intro, making it the first full song on “Better Dayz.” Frankie “Nitty” Pimentel handled the remix production, while Johnny “J” remained credited as a producer and composer. The title also had history behind it. 2Pac had already released “Str8 Ballin’” on “Thug Life: Volume 1” in 1994. “Still Ballin’” returned to that idea with a different beat and a new guest appearance. That means the same 2Pac verse can be heard across several noticeably different versions: the official remix with Trick Daddy, the earlier recording with Kurupt and the “How We Do” remix. Which version do you prefer: the Trick Daddy version, the Kurupt version or the “How We Do” remix? 🤔⁉️ 🎥: Gobi M. Rahimi #rap #hiphop #rapmusic #hiphopmusic #2pac
In November 1985, hip-hop pioneers Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick performed their iconic track “The Show” in the Netherlands, during a time when rap and hip-hop were still unfamiliar to many audiences. Although the crowd in this footage may seem relatively subdued, the duo’s music was making a significant impact elsewhere, helping bring hip-hop to a wider international audience. Their collaborative album, The Show, became a landmark release, featuring another unforgettable track, “La Di Da Di,” which further cemented their influence on the genre. Decades later, these performances remain a reminder of hip-hop’s evolution and enduring appeal — and the music still sounds as fresh today as it did when it first dropped. Young Buck didn’t waste a single bar in this freestyle 😮‍💨🔥 In 2003, G-Unit stepped into BET’s “Rap City: Tha Basement” with Big Tigger and traded verses over the instrumental from 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Runnin’.” The timing made the session even more important. By 2003, Young Buck had joined G-Unit and brought a Nashville voice to a group whose foundation was in Queens. Their debut album “Beg for Mercy” followed in November, making this freestyle a snapshot of the group as one of hip-hop’s biggest runs was beginning. The “Rap City” booth became an important part of hip-hop television because it placed the focus on delivery, presence and personality. Buck’s energy and Southern cadence helped him stand apart while still fitting naturally beside 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks. More than two decades later, this remains one of the clearest examples of what Young Buck brought to G-Unit’s early sound. What are y’all rating this Young Buck freestyle out of 10? 🤔⁉️ #rap #hiphop #rapmusic #hiphopmusic #freestyle
