Another incredibly busy day at the Capitol. I was proud to stand alongside 40 members of the California Children’s Legislative Caucus to unveil a comprehensive bill package focused on one clear priority: putting our children first. As an educator, I never miss an opportunity to step back into the classroom, even if it’s on the Capitol floor. I had the joy of welcoming a group of students for an on the go civic engagement lesson and conversation about how government works. There is nothing more inspiring than seeing young people visit their Capitol, ask thoughtful questions, and connect directly with their representatives. Our children are paying attention, and we must continue showing up for them. #ChildrenFirst #CALeg #CivicEngagement

My ex asked me to keep the kids because he had COVID. I already had plans. The parenting plan didn’t require me to say yes. I could have told him to figure it out. I could have reminded him that it was his parenting time. I could have said, “Not my problem.” But I didn’t. I said yes. Not because I owed him anything. Not because we agreed on everything. And not because I didn’t have my own plans. I said yes because I didn’t want my children getting sick if it could be avoided. Could he have been exaggerating? Could he have changed his mind? Could he have simply not wanted the kids that weekend? Maybe. I honestly don’t know. But if someone tells me they have COVID or another contagious illness, I’m not going to risk my children’s health trying to figure out whether they’re telling the truth. I made the decision that felt right based on the information I had at the time. And I can live with that. I also wasn’t trying to determine whether he deserved my flexibility. I was trying to determine what was best for my children. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about co-parenting is this: Sometimes the question isn’t: “What am I entitled to do?” The question is: “What’s best for my children?” That doesn’t mean saying yes to everything. It doesn’t mean having no boundaries. It simply means looking at the situation through the eyes of your child instead of through the lens of conflict. The parenting plan gave us structure. But kindness, flexibility, and common sense helped us navigate the things life couldn’t predict. Because children deserve parents who put their needs above the need to be right. #childrenfirst #healingjourney #divorcerecovery #mentalhealth #parentingafterdivorce
I am grateful to all the young people across Bolton South and Walkden who got in touch with me about their experiences online. The evidence from the Government's own survey is clear: children want risky features restricted, they want limits on infinite scroll, and they want their location kept private. These young people are not asking to be shut out. They are asking for an internet that works for them, and it is our job to make that happen. #OnlineSafety #LabourMP #BoltonSouth #Walkden #ChildrenFirst
I enjoyed my one-on-one fireside chat with moderator Bonnie Boswell of PBS SoCal at First 5 California’s 2026 Summit, “Their Futures First.” It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about California’s children and families, from affordable childcare and early childhood education to healthcare, economic opportunity and policies that help every child thrive. Thank you all the leaders, advocates, educators, healthcare professionals and policymakers who came together to put our children’s futures first! #TheirFuturesFirst #First5California #EarlyChildhoodEducation #Childcare #CaliforniaFamilies #ChildrenFirst @first5california
