“Instagram has billions of photos. How can it instantly retrieve a picture from 2015?” #programming #systemdesign #cloudcomputing #tech Because the image and the information about the image are stored separately. This is called a Decoupled Storage Architecture. Step 1 — Blob Storage The actual image file is stored as a Blob (Binary Large Object) inside large-scale storage systems. These could be systems like: Distributed object stores Infrastructure similar to Haystack (Meta’s photo storage system) These systems are optimized for storing raw files efficiently. Step 2 — Metadata Database The information about the photo lives in a database: User ID Timestamp Photo ID Storage location Engagement data These records are stored in high-performance distributed databases such as Cassandra or PostgreSQL. Step 3 — Retrieval When you scroll your feed: Instagram queries the database for metadata The metadata contains the exact storage pointer to the image The image is fetched from the storage system A CDN delivers it from the nearest server This separation allows Instagram to scale to billions of photos without slowing down.
