La sequenza del Club Silencio in Mulholland Drive è senza dubbio una delle più iconiche del cinema di David Lynch. Essa trascende la dimensione psicoanalitica, che esplora il confine tra sogno, delirio e realtà, e sollecita invece una riflessione più ampia sul medium cinematografico stesso. Si configura come una scena teatrale che, tuttavia, si fa portatrice di una riflessione metacinematografica sul cinema come forma espressiva. In tale contesto, la sequenza evidenzia l’illusione insita nella rappresentazione scenica: ciò che ci viene mostrato è, in effetti, una finzione. La scena ci invita a riflettere sulla natura intrinseca del cinema, mettendo in risalto l’apparente contraddizione di uno spettacolo che sembra essere dal vivo, ma che in realtà è registrato. Questo gioco di apparenti opposizioni non si limita a interrogare la realtà della rappresentazione, ma si erge come una vera e propria metafora del cinema stesso. Il cinema, infatti, si configura come un’opera completamente artificiale, fondata sulla “non-presenza”, ma in grado, nonostante ciò, di suscitare emozioni autentiche. Once he said, “I don’t think that people accept the fact that life doesn’t make sense. I think it makes people terribly uncomfortable. It seems like religion & myth were invented against that, trying to make sense out of it.” Many might not know, but Lynch's filmography is much inspired by both Dostoevsky & Kafka. Actually, David Lynch's favorite books are all big fish! The depth of ideas & storytelling present in these books could inspire anyone. Lynch read most of these books before the 1980s. These are the books David selected as his favorite for his club "Silencio" in Paris. The Name Above The Title by Frank Capra Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky The Art Spirit by Robert Henri Anonymous Photographs by Robert Flynn Johnson The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka Now, this provides a keen insight into Lynch’s working mind. In his film Eraserhead, Lynch never shied away throwing us directly into the abysmal end of fear & despair. Henry views as his past mistakes, his regrets were personal. Isn’t regret something we all have felt at some point in our lives? The need to ‘erase’ our mistakes so we can fulfill our life’s dreams without anything coming in the way? But what are we left with if we take all of our experiences & remove every moment of unhappiness and every mistake we ever made? We wouldn’t be left with ourselves, that’s for sure. This themes are pretty similar to Dostoevskian style of writing. Dostoevsky’s deep preoccupations on moral ambiguity, guilt & the divided self resonate deeply with the themes explored throughout Twin Peaks, especially with its preoccupation of the portrayal of violence as something not inherently an action, but as metaphysical rupture. And even Kafka, Twin Peaks carries that eternal sense of alienation. Lynch mirrors Kafka’s narrative ethos by prioritising atmosphere over exposition. Just how Metamorphosis emphasizes on the setting of the room of Gregor to hike the states of profound epistemological uncertainty.

Venerdì scorso abbiamo aperto le porte di SpacePark per Unconventional Orbits — un evento davvero speciale realizzato insieme a Club Silencio. Ho avuto il privilegio di moderare il talk e confrontarmi con menti e team straordinari: Alessandro Franceschetti (Luna Rossa), Greg Goya, Daisy Osakue e Jakidale – Jacopo D’Alesio. Ognuno di loro ha portato una prospettiva unica su come passione, coraggio e creatività possano spingerci oltre i confini del convenzionale — che si tratti di spazio, sport, innovazione o arte. È stato affascinante vedere come percorsi così diversi possano convergere verso un obiettivo comune: immaginare e costruire un futuro senza limiti, sulla Terra e oltre. 🌍🛰️ Un enorme grazie a tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile questa serata e a chi è venuto a trovarci a SpacePark. Last Friday, we opened the doors of SpacePark for Unconventional Orbits — a truly special event created together with Club Silencio. I had the privilege of moderating the talk and engaging in an inspiring conversation with some extraordinary minds and teams — Alessandro Franceschetti (Luna Rossa), @greg_goya , @daisyosakue , and @jakidale . Both of them brought a unique perspective on how passion, courage, and creativity can take us beyond conventional boundaries — whether in space, sport, innovation, or art.
