“Thank you to the Coens for being crazy enough to think that I could do that and put one of the most horrible haircuts in history over my head.”
Javier Bardem won the Oscar for Actor in a Supporting Role at the 80th Academy Awards for portraying psychopathic assassin Anton Chigurh in ‘No Country for Old Men.’ The win made Bardem the first Spanish actor to win an Oscar.
Spanish translation: “Mama, this is for you. This is for your grandparents, for your parents Rafael and Matilde. This is for the Spanish performers who, like you, have brought dignity and pride to our profession. This is for Spain, and this is for all of you.”
‘No Country for Old Men’ also won Best Picture, Best Director (Joel and Ethan Coen), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Joel and Ethan Coen), and received nominations for Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Film Editing (Roderick Jaynes), Sound Editing (Skip Lievsay), and Sound Mixing (Skip Lievsay, Craig Berkey, Greg Orloff, and Peter Kurland).

George Clooney practiced his singing for weeks, but in the end his singing voice was dubbed by bluegrass singer Dan Tyminski. He agreed to do this film without having read the script. Clooney stated that he liked even the Coens' least successful films.
The film's soundtrack became an unlikely blockbuster, even surpassing the success of the film. By early 2001, it had sold five million copies; spawned a documentary film, three follow-up albums ("O Sister" and "O Sister 2") and two concert tours; and won Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Single of the Year (for "Man of Constant Sorrow"). It also won five Grammys including Album of the Year, and hit #1 on the Billboard album charts the week of March 15, 2002, 63 weeks after its release and over a year after the release of the film.

No Country for Old Men hides its darkest moment in a gesture most viewers miss.
Anton Chigurh leaves Carla Jean’s house and checks the bottom of his boots carefully before getting in his car. He’s checking for blood. The Coens and cinematographer Roger Deakins never show Carla Jean’s death, never cut to a body, never confirm what happened inside. But that single action tells you everything. Chigurh follows his code absolutely, and his coin toss determined her fate. The boot check is deliberate staging that reveals murder through implication rather than spectacle. It’s brilliant restraint, trusting audiences to understand horror through suggestion instead of showing it explicitly. The Coens make you piece together what happened, forcing you to imagine the violence rather than witnessing it, which somehow makes it more devastating. Chigurh’s methodical inspection of his soles carries more weight than any death scene could, proving that sometimes what you don’t show matters more than what you do.
No Country for Old Men (2007) is a neo-western thriller directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel. It stars Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin in a cat-and-mouse chase across the Texas border. The film won four Oscars including Best Picture and Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins, celebrated for methodical pacing and visual storytelling through implication.

Josh Brolin broke his shoulder in a motorcycle accident two days after getting the part in this film. In an interview with NOW Magazine, he recalled thinking, “Fucking shit. I really wanted to work with the Coens,” as he flew over the car that hit him. His injury, however, turned out to be a non-issue since his character is shot in the shoulder very early in the film.
