In a small village in West Bengal, India, highly venomous cobras coexist with humans with mutual tolerance and respect for each other, reflecting the power of adaptation. Conservation of snakes is very important as they are apex predators preying on toads, rats and mice, keeping ecosystem in balance while preventing losses to farmers. Nurturing the next generation of elephant guardians: For many children in rural Kenya, elephants represent fear — stories of crop destruction and frightening encounters passed down through generations. But when students meet our orphan herd firsthand, everything changes. They discover that elephants are actually complex, loving, and wonderfully intelligent beings deserving of our respect and protection. Our school trip programme has become a cornerstone of our community engagement efforts, introducing young Kenyans to their country’s incredible natural heritage in a way that is safe and educational, creating memories that last a lifetime. Every year, we lead more than 80 fully subsidised field trips into national parks and protected areas, welcoming thousands of students into the world of wildlife conservation.  These transformative experiences go far beyond a simple day out. Led by our passionate Community Outreach Officer, Samuel, students observe wildlife in their natural habitats while learning about the vital roles these animals play in Kenya’s ecosystem. For many, it’s their first positive encounter with the wildlife they share their landscape with. New research strongly suggests that prairie dogs are likely to reduce wildfire spread and intensity! Since prairie dogs clip down the vegetation around them and create burrows and bare ground, this reduces fuel for fire. Wildfire intensity is increasing across the western U.S. and Great Plains due several factors including historical fire suppression and drought. While prairie dog-human conflict exists, it is important to consider all the ecosystem services this wildlife species may provide to us and how hard it is to replace nature once we’ve lost it.
