šļø When the same department controls both the investigation and the case files reporters are trying to access, who's really checking who?
As press coverage of Mena grew louder in the late 1980s, Arkansas State Police Director Tommy Goodwin repeatedly told reporters the investigation had turned up nothing worth pursuing further. Critics at the time pointed out that his own department controlled most of the records journalists were trying to review. š
Goodwin never publicly wavered from that position, even as outside investigators kept turning up new leads that suggested otherwise.
Decades later, people still debate whether that was genuine caution or something closer to containment.

A cold case spanning 15 years finally reaches a somber conclusion. After meticulous analysis of case files and targeted sonar mapping near a high-traffic boat ramp, the team at Adventures with Purpose successfully located the vehicle belonging to Robert Long.
For over a decade, this vehicle sat submerged in 19 feet of water, undetected despite the thousands of vessels passing directly over it annually. This discovery brings long-awaited answers to a family searching for closure since 2015. It serves as a stark reminder of the incredible dedication required to unravel mysteries that have gone cold for far too long.

On March 20, 1982, 13-year-old Carrie Ann Jopek left school in Milwaukee after being suspended. She was expected to walk homeāa route she had taken many times before.
She never made it.
Despite an extensive search, Carrie seemed to vanish without a trace. For years, her family lived with unanswered questions, hoping one day they would learn what had happened.
Seventeen years later, in 1999, Carrieās remains were discovered beneath the rear porch of a Milwaukee homeāhidden there all along.
But the case still wasnāt over.
It wasnāt until advances in DNA testing linked Jose Ferreira Jr. to the crime that investigators finally got the answers they had been searching for. In 2016, more than three decades after Carrie disappeared, he confessed and was convicted.
Carrie Ann Jopekās case is a heartbreaking reminder that even after decades, justice can still catch up.
Do you think cold cases should always be reopened as DNA technology improves?
