For more than two decades, Virginia Tech had used Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” to create one of college football’s most electrifying team entrances. But the band had never performed the song inside Lane Stadium—until this night. On May 7, 2025, Metallica arrived in Blacksburg during their M72 World Tour and closed the concert with the song the stadium had been waiting years to hear live. As James Hetfield shouted, “Hokies, let’s go!” the legendary opening riff echoed around Lane Stadium and more than 65,000 fans began jumping together. The synchronized movement generated vibrations strong enough to appear clearly on a nearby seismograph. Released in 1991 as the lead single from Metallica’s self-titled “Black Album,” “Enter Sandman” had become part of Virginia Tech tradition long before the band finally brought it home. This was more than a concert finale—it was the moment Metallica played the song Lane Stadium was built to shake for. Gunna, born Sergio Kitchens in College Park, Georgia, has been performing with a full live band for years, setting himself apart from most rappers who rely on backing tracks. The moment that spread most widely came during a live set where his guitarist moved from “Sold Out Dates” directly into “Yosemite,” a Travis Scott collaboration from 2018, without breaking the groove. “Yosemite” was produced by Southside and appears on Travis Scott’s “Astroworld.” Gunna’s verse on that song helped cement his reputation as one of the more melodic voices in Atlanta trap, and hearing it rebuilt around a live guitar brought a completely different texture to a song most people only know from the studio version. The band setup seen in Gunna’s performances typically includes a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and drummer on a TAMA kit running through Marshall amplifiers, which is a full rock-style rig applied to hip-hop material. That combination of live instrumentation and rap delivery is still unusual enough in the genre that a single guitarist transition can rack up hundreds of thousands of views on its own.
Just a little something It was senior year of college. Our band was called Rad Dad. I sang and played rhythm guitar. COVID happened, school went fully remote, we all moved back in with our parents, and Rad Dad was forever frozen in a state of “to be continued”. 🥁@dahelterskelter 🎸bass @lanaduda_ 🎸 guitar @whatsaaronsinstagram?? #missingraddadforever

The energy surrounding college football is something that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else in sports. It’s not just the game itself either. It’s waking up on a Saturday morning, seeing thousands of people already tailgating, hearing the marching band across campus, and watching an entire college town spend all day preparing for a few hours of football. Once kickoff gets close, everything goes to another level. Student sections are packed, fight songs are blasting, traditions that have existed for generations are happening all around the stadium, and sometimes more than 100,000 people are screaming for the same team. When a huge touchdown happens or an upset is completed and the student section pours onto the field, there aren’t many environments in sports that can compare. The NFL has better players and bigger stars, but college football has an emotional connection that makes it completely different. Rivalries can divide families, one loss can ruin an entire season, and Saturdays become something fans look forward to all year. You don’t just watch college football, you feel it.
