Have you ever heard the call of a Common Loon in the morning? 🎶 A quiet morning and several years of practice photographing on a rocking kayak allowed Harry Collins (@harrycollinsphotography) to capture this Common Loon family calling on a lake. He made sure to keep a safe distance so as not to not disturb the loons, as they are very protective of their young. Each year the @americanbirdingassociation picks a Bird of the Year. The bird is chosen to inspire and educate, to spark enthusiasm for birding, and to highlight a conservation challenge or success. This year’s pick is the Common Loon, or the Great Northern Diver. The only thing common about the Common loon is the ubiquity of its call. The sound of the Common loon is the sound of the outdoors. If you haven’t heard a loon calling in real time, you’ve most certainly heard one on television. They are second only to the call of the Red-tailed hawk as a representative bird sound in popular media. These large, blocky headed birds with a robust, straight bill, are the largest of the loons commonly found in Oregon. Their plumage is black and white and ornate during breeding seasons and more subdued grays, browns, beige and whites in winter.
