Your Common App Activities List isn’t just a list of clubs. It’s one of the most valuable pieces of application real estate you have. With limited characters, every field needs a job. Before submitting your college applications: ✔️ Choose the most accurate Common App activity category ✔️ Maximize the Position/Leadership field ✔️ Use the Organization field strategically ✔️ Start descriptions with strong action verbs ✔️ Cut filler words and unnecessary sentences ✔️ Quantify impact when the numbers provide meaningful context ✔️ Focus on contribution, leadership, responsibility, achievement, and growth ✔️ Put your strongest and most meaningful activities toward the top ✔️ Reorder the list once the rest of your application is complete Admissions officers shouldn’t have to hunt through your application to figure out what you’ve accomplished. Make the Activities List do its job. Save this before you finish your Common App, and send it to a senior who is still writing activity descriptions. #CommonApp #CommonAppTips #CommonAppActivities #ActivitiesList
Day 4 of Transforming your common app activities section . . . #commonapp #collegeapps #highschool #collegeadmissions #senioryear
TOMORROW the common app is officially live! Here are the too hacks for nailing it from admissions officers ‼️ #commonapp #classof2027 #collegeadmissions
Did you know the Common App gives you only 150 characters to describe each activity? That’s about the length of a text message. Every word matters. Instead of simply listing what you did, use those 150 characters to highlight your responsibilities, leadership, and impact. This week’s Blueprint Countdown assignment is to create an Activities & Accomplishments document. Document everything now so that when it’s time to complete the Common App, you’ll have the best details to choose from instead of trying to remember everything at the last minute. Save this post so you can refer back to it when you’re completing your Activities section. One week. One goal. One step closer.

🔥 Hot tips for completing the Honors Section of the Common App You can list up to five honors, and for each one you’ll be asked to provide a brief description (100 characters or less). ❌ Just don’t list your honors classes - that is a common mistake I see! Common App really should rename this section “Awards” 🔥 HOT TIP! For each award, you’ll want to indicate the name of the honor, its meaning and purpose, and the years you received it. So many students make the mistake of only listing the name of the honor, leaving colleges questioning what exactly the honor is (if not obvious), how selective it may be and the qualifications needed for achieving it. Make sure to lead with your most impressive achievements and be concise by using phrases instead of sentences to make the most of your character count! The honors section is an excellent way for college admissions officers to gain an understanding of your strengths. 💫 Did you know I offer a service to review your application before you submit it to colleges and provide detailed feedback to help you stand out in the admissions process? Comment “REVIEW” and I will send you a link to all of the application review services I offer! #collegeadmissions #CommonApp #classof2027

Step 1: Choose a prompt (if the school you’re applying to/Common App gives you options). 📝 Note: You might not have to choose a topic upfront. Step 2: Open a new doc on your computer or page in your notebook. Step 3: Write a list of ideas for stories, experiences, and things that you could include in your essay. Step 4: Look up “college essay examples.” Step 5: Read a few to get a feel for what people include in their successful essays. 📝 Note: There are two main types of essays: narrative- and montage-structure. Which seems best for your essay? Step 6: Choose the most exciting ideas from your list and write your first draft. Most of your essay will reflect on your past experiences. Then, you’ll explain where you are in the present moment, and where you hope to go in the future. Step 7: Set your essay aside for a few days/weeks. Step 8: Come back to your essay and read it out loud. Step 9: Note any places that sound awkward, or where you’ve included too much or not enough. Step 10: Ask, “could this essay have been written by anyone else in the world?” If the answer is yes… Step 11: Use the “highlight” tool in your writing app to highlight: -Where you include stories -Where you share the lessons you’ve learned from these stories. Step 12: If you’ve got way more “takeaways” or lessons than stories, now you can see where you need to add more story. Step 13: Edit your essay based on these notes. Step 14: Find a teacher, professional writing tutor, or guidance counselor to read your essay and give you feedback. Step 15: Make a short list of concerns you had about your essay. Step 16: Give them this list when you hand your essay over for feedback and ask them to look at these things. Step 17: When you get your essay back, make the changes they suggest, as long as they don’t make your essay feel less like you. Step 18: Read your essay aloud again, looking out for typos. Step 19: Submit your essay! If you’re starting your college essays this summer, comment “SUMMER” to grab my full system for writing an unputdownable personal statement!

If your student is starting their Common App essay this summer, save this post. 👇 After reading hundreds of thousands of college essays throughout our admissions careers, my team and I have noticed that the strongest essays almost always have these three things in common: ✅ They reveal something new about the student. ✅ They prioritize reflection over the story itself. ✅ They sound authentic. Notice what’s not on that list… ❌ A dramatic life story. ❌ A groundbreaking accomplishment. ❌ The “perfect” essay topic. Some of the best essays I’ve ever read were about completely ordinary moments. What made them memorable wasn’t the topic, it was what they revealed about the student. Comment ESSAY GUIDE and I’ll send you my FREE College Essay Guide with tips to help your student get started. #collegeadmissions #parentsofteens #collegeessay #collegebound #collegebound
