Visual representation of the OCD and Non-OCD brain. I break down how compulsions (like checking, seeking reassurance, or avoiding) might feel helpful in the moment, but strengthen the anxiety in the long term.
Learning how to tolerate uncertainty is what actually helps the brain heal from OCD.

mental đŁ compulsions đŁ exist â some people with OCD have obsessions and mental compulsions, making their symptoms invisible
.
It is just as important to stop mental compulsions as it is to stop physical compulsions like sanitizing and checking.
.
Common mental compulsions (including but not limited to):
đ Rumination
đ Mental review
đ Mental checking
đ Hypothesizing
đ Thought neutralization
đ Mental counting
đ Compulsive prayer
đ Self-punishment
đ âMental hoardingâ

I know a thing or two about whatâs funnyâand I can also tell you whatâs not: OCD. Nothing has made me feel more isolated than having OCD.
Due to misconceptions, people often throw around the term âOCDâ like itâs no big deal. In reality, OCD is a severe mental health condition that causes unwanted thoughts, images, and urges that stay stuck in your head, no matter how hard you try to make them disappear.
When OCD is used as a joke, it keeps people suffering in silence. To help break the stigma, Iâve partnered with the leading OCD-specific treatment company, NOCD, for the #KnowOCD campaign.
Together, weâll work to spread awareness about this debilitating condition. Our hope is to reach those who need help the most, bring evidence-based treatment to them, and end the global suffering caused by OCD.
Weâre launching a series of Public Service Announcements on social media, streaming services, TV, and even on billboards that illustrate the real impact of OCD. Check out the first one!

Did you know the more you avoid anxiety the more anxious you will become? This is because your brain gets the message that anxiety=bad/danger the more we avoid it

Avoidance is such a tricky compulsion or safety behavior with OCD & anxiety. While it feels helpful, it just feels the fear and inhibits learning.

OCD often gets confused with OCPD, leading people to wrongly believe that a love of organization and order = OCD đŁ
.
OCD: egodystonic (opposite to a personâs values and desires)
.
OCPD: egosyntonic (in alignment with a personâs values and desires)
.
I like my bookshelf to look like this and it has nothing to do with my OCD. My OCD nearly took my life. There was nothing to love about it.

OCD always promises relief. âJust this one compulsion⌠and youâll feel better.â
And yeah â maybe for a moment.
But what it really does?
Feeds the loop. Strengthens the doubt. Keeps you stuck. That âsolutionâ is the trap.
Recovery starts when you stop buying what OCD is selling.

We call all of this âanxietyâ
but itâs actually a trauma loop your body is trying to complete.
Overthinking is your mind scanning for danger because it once wasnât safe to relax.
Compulsions are survival strategies your nervous system created to feel in control.
Intrusive images are old emotional memories resurfacing without context.
None of this means youâre broken.
It means your body remembers something your mind has pushed away.
When you understand that these are trauma responses, not personality flaws you stop blaming yourself
and start working with your system instead of fighting it.
Do you experience any of these?

You canât recover from OCD by compulsively trying to recover from OCDâŚ.
Read that again đŤśđť
I see this over and over again. We start to make some progress with reducing compulsions and then BOOM đĽ OCDâs new âthemeâ is ârecoveryâ.
It tells you, you HAVE to keep researching, analyzing, checking whether youâre âdoing recovery right.â And to stop would be irresponsible or wrongâŚ.
But hereâs the thing - thatâs just OCD wearing a different outfit đ¤Ż
When we spot OCDâs tricks we can start calling it out in all itâs disguises:
OCD: âWhat if youâre not responding to intrusive thoughts the way you and your therapist discussed and youâre making it worse?â
You: I see what youâre doing OCD, not answering that.
Compulsions are compulsions - whether they are trying to figure out if you are a terrible person OR if youâre doing OCD recovery âproperlyâ.
Has OCD tried this one with you? Let me know ⤾ď¸
