Rappler Investigates: Filipinos spying for China As the Philippines shifts focus to external defense, security officials also look inwards, to check for "insider threats" — government personnel or people close to them who could be sources of information leaks. In a three-part investigative series, Rappler explores how and why these young Filipinos spied for handlers, whom security sources and the National Security Council confirmed to be Chinese. Confessed Filipino spy: Handler enticed me with promise of better life WATCH: Rappler speaks with Lawrence* a former researcher for the Department of National Defense (DND) and civilian staff of the Philippine Navy who has since been apprehended and confessed to engaging in an espionage scheme Philippine security officials say were led by Chinese nationals. (*Name has been changed) In a sit-down, on-camera interview since Rappler’s investigative series was released, Lawrence recounts how he wanted to tap out of the supposed consulting gig but was lured back in by Harley*, a fellow government worker who claimed she’d been doing the same for years. Lawrence provided analysis to Harley and her foreign handler, whom he only knows as “Scott Chan.” Their questions, Lawrence tells Rappler, ranged from sentiments within the agencies about domestic political issues to the Philippines’ maritime plans.
