TRAVEL NOTES | THE COTSWOLDS 🍂

Save this guide to Castle Combe, Cotswolds
Tucked away in Wiltshire, Castle Combe is often called the prettiest village in England — and honestly, it’s hard to argue with that. With golden Cotswold stone cottages, a little stream (the Bybrook) running under a stone bridge, and flower boxes spilling over windowsills, it looks like time has stopped here.
🌿 Walking through feels like stepping straight into a period drama. In fact, you are on a film set: the village has starred in Doctor Dolittle (1967), Stardust, War Horse, The Wolfman, Dr Thorne, and even the TV series Slow Horses. For War Horse, they covered the modern tarmac with mud and transformed the street into 1914 England.
✨ Things to see & do:
– Wander “The Street” and soak up the view from the bridge (the ultimate photo spot).
– Pop into St Andrew’s Church, with its medieval clock.
– Take the woodland walk above the village for sweeping views.
– Stay overnight if you can — the village is magical once the day-trippers leave.
📸 Tip: Arrive early morning or just before sunset for the softest light and quieter lanes.
Castle Combe doesn’t shout for attention. It whispers, with charm in every stone and corner. ✨

Hurrah for this glorious sunny spell: sunshine on Cotswold stone, cheery hydrangeas by the porch and beautiful blue skies.

My must asked question is what colour we’ve painted our woodwork. This is RAL7002 - initially my husband’s choice but one I’ve grown to love.

🚗 Suggested Cotswold Road Trip (Loop from London)
Total drive time: about 3.5–4 hours (without stops)
⸻
1. Burford
Often called the gateway to the Cotswolds, Burford’s high street slopes gently down to the River Windrush, lined with old stone houses and antique shops.
Don’t miss: Huffkins Bakery for a cream tea and the view from St. John the Baptist Church tower.
⸻
2. Bibury
A short drive east of Burford, Bibury is postcard-perfect. Arlington Row is one of England’s most photographed streets.
Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour buses.
⸻
3. Bourton-on-the-Water
Known as the “Venice of the Cotswolds” for its little footbridges over the River Windrush. It’s popular but lovely.
See: Model Village, Birdland, or just stroll along the river with ice cream in hand.
⸻
4. Upper and Lower Slaughter
Just five minutes from Bourton, these two tiny villages are quiet and ridiculously charming.
Walk: The 1-mile path between them along the stream is one of the prettiest short walks in the Cotswolds.
⸻
5. Stow-on-the-Wold
Larger and hillier than the others, Stow has great independent shops and pubs.
Don’t miss: The yew tree-framed door at St. Edward’s Church — it looks straight out of The Lord of the Rings.
⸻
6. Snowshill
A little detour west brings you to Snowshill, a hidden gem.
See: Snowshill Manor (National Trust) and its quirky collection of treasures. The village itself is tiny and peaceful.
⸻
7. Broadway
A classic market village with elegant honey-stone houses and boutique hotels.
Walk: Up to Broadway Tower for sweeping countryside views.
⸻
8. Chipping Campden
One of the most beautiful high streets in England, full of arts-and-crafts history.
Eat: At Eight Bells Inn or Campden Coffee Company.
Bonus: The Cotswold Way long-distance trail starts here if you fancy a short hike.
