Healthy spring gardens always start with strong soil. A broadfork or tiller breaks up compact clay and creates space for roots, water, and air. These tools give your seedlings a real chance, especially in tough market garden beds. Soil prep now means stronger plants and bigger harvests. Want our beginner’s homesteading guide? Hardening off plants is so important. If you do it hunger games style, your plants will either die or can be stunted, obviously leading to poor to no yields. Taking the extra few days to slowly acclimate them to your area can increase your harvest greatly! #homesteading #organicgardening #seedstarting
It’s not planting season yet in Minnesota… but it is prep season 🌱 Here’s what I’m doing to get my raised beds ready for spring: • Cleaning out old debris • Cutting back anything I left for winter habitat • Lightly raking the surface • Adding a fresh layer of compost I don’t till my beds — I focus on feeding the soil instead šŸ¤Ž Slow work now = better harvest later. Are you team ā€œwait until Mayā€ or already outside every sunny day like me? #zone4garden #midwestgarden #raisedbedgardening #gardenprep #homesteadlife
Sending off a soil sample can be the difference between *bounty or bust* in the garden. Last year, we had just bought this land right before garden season. I was so excited to jump in that I skipped the soil test… And it showed. Things grew, sure, but not abundantly. They started off okay, then slowly struggled. Disease crept in, production dropped, and overall it just wasn’t what it should’ve been.. what it could have been. So this year, we’re doing it differently. We sent off a soil sample to Auburn, and within a few days I had answers. Turns out… my soil is considered "extremely acidic" 🫠 Not exactly what I was hoping for.. but at least now we know. And now we have a plan: → balance the pH → add back nutrients → actually give these plants a fighting chance Here’s to learning as we go and putting in the work to build better soil. 🌱 And if I could go back? I definitely would’ve grown cover crops over the winter into early spring… But there’s always next season. #homestead #garden #soil #organicgardening
Test your soil BEFORE planting anything! I always just added compost at the beginning of the season and fish fertilizer throughout the summer. Why doesn’t this work?āŒ You might be adding excess nutrients that your plants don’t need or the opposite, not giving them what they do need. #backyardgarden #backyardhomestead #homesteadforbeginners #suburbanhomestead #beginnergardenertips
Have you ever looked at bare soil and felt excited? This space used to be full of stumps and old roots, and now it’s a clean slate. Sometimes progress doesn’t look like growth yet. Sometimes it looks like clearing, planning, and starting fresh. There’s something powerful about building a garden intentionally from the ground up. I share my garden planning process and step-by-step resources over on WiredHomestead.com if you’re starting fresh this year too. Are you adding new beds this season or improving what you already have? #GardenReset #HomesteadGarden #SpringPrep #GrowFood #GardenPlanning
We have 9 raised beds in our garden, and this is how we filled all of them. The compost and manure made a great top soil! We didn't need to add any fertilizer or anything that first year. Fortunately, my in-laws have a horse, so they share their manure with us, but many farms are willing to offload manure to locals. We add a little more every year to top off the beds and amend with worm castings and fertilizer! +++ If you're new here, we've been growing, prepping, and cooking pork free since 2013 and low nickel since 2021. If you or someone you know shares these allergies or has alpha gal syndrome, share this Reel, follow along for more gardening, cooking, and lifestyle content, and leave any questions in the comments! ALWAYS: āŒļø no pork āŒļø no soy āŒļø no nuts āŒļø no oats

Before you spend hundreds filling raised garden beds, try layering them instead 🌱 We started with organic matter from our yard — leaves, sticks, and pine straw — then added cardboard to block weeds, topped it with soil, and mixed in compost. This method saves money, builds healthy soil, and helps your garden thrive over time.
