cover crops are AMAZING. Here I walk you through the types & how they improve soil, what to plant, how to plant, and when to cut them down! BONUS Tip: if you raise rabbits, this gives them EVERYTHING they need to eat. 😉 If you learned something new, let me know in the comments ❤️ #covercrops #beginnergardener #beginnerhomesteader #homestead #tipsforbeginners
Watch how @trillfarmgarden undersows kale, chicory and more with cover crops to boost soil health, maintain ground cover and cut down on council waste compost. A clever system both vegetable and flower growers can learn from! See more in my latest YouTube video with Ash from Trill farm (link in bio) #marketgardening #soilhealth #covercrops

Cover crops in the garden are about to go to seed and need to be mowed… sounds like a job for the sheep! 🌿🐑 Our flock is happily munching on radish, rye, crimson clover, hairy vetch, buckwheat, phacelia and more, lending their services and assisting our garden team prep the soil (which would otherwise be lightly mowed & tillled by hand) before transplanting summer vegetables. Most of the sheep are pregnant! The cover crops provide them with a diversity of vital nutrients. And as they graze, their manure enriches the soil with organic matter, supports microbial life, and boosts overall fertility—playing a vital role in our regenerative farming practices.🌱 This plot previously produced an exceptional harvest of leeks, squash, and lettuces. Once their season came to a close, cover crops were planted to contribute organic matter and nutrients to the soil, enlivening it while also helping to keep water on this land, and providing food for our animals and pollinators. 🐝🌾 Once the sheep have finished chomping, trampling, and fertilizing, we’ll turn what’s left of the plants into the soil. This is one stop in our sheep flock’s grazing rotation around the farm. Lambing season (a little later than usual for us this year) is right around the corner, so we’re guiding them to the lushest spots around the farm to stay strong and healthy.💚 Stay tuned to see where on the farm they graze next…. any guesses?! #apricotlanefarms #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #covercrops #biodynamicfarm #sheep #soilfertility #spring #garden #homestead

I planted OATS as a COVER CROP in my garden 2 weeks ago. Here’s the update/ what I learnt: 🌱1. I should have broadcast sprinkled the seeds more heavily. I’ll probably go back and add more seeds in some of the empty patches. 🌱2. I sowed the seeds just 2 weeks before my first avg frost date. We haven’t gotten a frost yet, but in hindsight, planting the cover crop 3-4 weeks before the first frost would have been ideals so the plants could grow taller (for chop & drop to work). 🌱3. I planted oats in an area where I grew beans. Legumes naturally fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and add it back to the soil. Next time I’ll be planting my cover crop in an area where I grew tomatoes or other heavy feeders. This isn’t a big deal though, as cover crops do prevent soil erosion over winter and I’m sure this area of the garden will be amped with nutrients by spring! #covercrops #covercrop #oats #gardening #gardeningtips #wintergarden #soilhealth #soil #soilscience #growwithresh #reshgala #vegetablegardening #garden #growsomethinggreen #organicgarden #organicgardening #allotment #communitygarden #allotmentlife #fallgarden #sustainableliving #sustainablesprout #thehappygardeninglife #zone6b #njgardening
Shout out to the like 10 of y’all who guided me on what to do with these damn cover crops lol I knew I didn’t wanna disturb the soil and this was the perfect lil option 🤗 I like to use cover crops especially when I may not have enough compost for the whole garden. These crops have protected the soil all winter and even added some nitrogen back into her so I’m grateful. I love the chop drop cover method cuz it’ll ensure the nutrients go right back to the soil 💚 How do you handle your cover crops? Do you plant cover crops? New to composting? How to build good soil by just planting plants! . Yes, even in a raised garden bed, you can use cover crops to build up good soil, improve drainage and reduce harmful nematode populations. All without spraying chemicals or disturbing the microbiome of your garden! Consider trying out a winter or summer cover crop in an open area of your garden this year and I promise you'll be amazed! @garden_in_minutes #texasgardening #covercrops #garfening #gardentips #zone9agarden
If you want better harvests, it doesn’t start with what you plant… it starts with what’s beneath your feet, just like Gillian is showing us here @gillian.swinton 🌱 This is your gentle reminder that soil isn’t just “dirt” you grow things in. It’s a living, breathing ecosystem, and if we want our gardens to give back, we need to give to it first. That’s where cover crops come in. Sown in autumn, crops like mustard work away through the cooler months, protecting your soil, feeding it, and improving its structure. Their roots help break up compacted ground, their leaves & roots shield from erosion, and when it’s time, you simply chop and drop, or dig them back in to return all that goodness to the earth. It’s one of the simplest, most natural ways to build healthier, more resilient soil ready for spring planting. Because the truth is, there’s no point putting energy into growing beautiful vegetables or flowers if the soil underneath can’t support them. Strong soil grows strong plants. Every time. So instead of leaving your beds bare this winter, think of it as your garden’s reset season. A chance to restore, replenish, and get one step ahead for the months to come. A little effort now… and your future garden will thank you for it. 🌱 Sow ~ Nurture ~ Nourish 🌱 #GardeningNZ #GrowYourOwnNZ #SeedsNZ #TrustedSeedsNZ #BackyardVegNZ #WinterGardenNZ #GrowFromSeed #HomegrownFood #VegetableGarden #KingsSeedsNZ #SustainableGardening #SowingGuideNZ #KiwiGardeners #Gardening101 #CoverCrops #SOWciety Media Description: Cover Crops Kings Seeds NZ Seeds NZ and Best seeds in NZ Soil Health

HOT OFF THE PRESS! A Farmer’s Guide to Soil Health Economics These two-page guides focus on corn, soybean, and small grain production systems and review current economic evidence on the costs and benefits of soil health practices. They are intended to help farmers, their ag advisors, and the larger agricultural conservation community to better understand and make decisions about the potential costs and benefits they might face from adopting soil health practices such as no-till, reduced till, cover crops, nutrient management, and conservation crop rotation.
