Is Health Insurance the biggest scam? 🤯
Everyone tells you — “Get health insurance or your savings will disappear.”
But they don’t tell you the full story.
Last month, I saw a family with ₹20 lakh health cover… yet they still had to pay ₹2 lakh from their own pocket during an emergency. The claim wasn’t rejected. The problem? A tiny line in the policy they never noticed — the sum insured limit was exhausted.
That’s the reality.
Room rent limits. Co-pay clauses. Waiting periods. Sub-limits.
In emergencies, these hidden terms can turn into lakhs from your pocket.
That’s why understanding your policy matters more than just buying one.
I recently came across Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 — and what stood out was how it challenges the “limit-based” mindset.
✔️ Unlimited sum insured
✔️ Unlimited claims per year
✔️ 145 pre-existing illnesses covered from Day 1
✔️ No waiting period
✔️ OPD coverage up to 5x premium (consultations, medicines, lab tests, even gym membership)
✔️ Renewal rewards & cashback benefits
✔️ Starting from just ₹17/day
Health insurance is important.
But choosing the right policy is even more important.
Comment “REASSURE” and I’ll send you the complete details.

Without insurance, his hospital bill was ₹ 60,000.
With insurance, the bill soared to ₹ 2,00,000.
🧐 That’s a 233% increase in what he thinks he’s covered.
Because when people buy insurance, they often forget:
1️⃣ About claim settlement ratio — even the top insurers like Care, Niva Bupa, ManipalCigna have CSRs of ~99-100%.
PolicyX
2️⃣ About exclusions, waiting periods, and sum insured caps that can raise costs.
3️⃣ That having insurance ≠ all medical bills getting paid.
✔ Moral: Before buying a policy, don’t just check if it's “cheap.”
Check:
• CSR number
• Lost amount (what’s not covered)
• Real past claim-settlement behavior
Because the wrong insurance can cost you 2-3× more than having no insurance at all.
Here are some health insurance companies in India and their recent claim settlement ratios
Care Health Insurance Ltd. has a CSR of 100% for FY 2022-23.
Niva Bupa Health Insurance Co. Ltd. also shows 100% in that same period.
ManipalCigna Health Insurance Co. Ltd. – about 99.96%.
Star Health & Allied Insurance – around 99.21%.
Aditya Birla Health Insurance – approx 99.01% CSR.
Reliance General Insurance has about 98.75% claims settled in the first three months of claim submission for FY 2022-23.
HDFC ERGO General Insurance – ~ 98.59%.
Zuno General Insurance – approx 98.54%.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance – about 98.53%.
Acko General Insurance Ltd. – roughly 97.68%.

THE COST OF "CHEAP" INSURANCE. 📉💸
If a professional in the medical field can get stuck with a ₹5 Lakh bill due to a "bank group policy," what about the rest of us?
Group policies often have hidden deductions:
❌ Room Rent Capping
❌ Treatment Limits
❌ No Consumables Cover
The lesson?
Your health insurance should protect your savings, not drain them. Review your policy every few years and upgrade to a plan that actually pays.

KEEP IN MIND WHILE BUYING HEALTH INSURANCE:
* Choose a sum insured that covers high medical inflation in metro cities. A minimum of ₹10–15 lakh is advisable, especially for a family floater plan.
* A high Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) indicates a trustworthy insurer (look for >95%). Prefer insurers with a quick, hassle-free claims process—check online reviews and IRDAI data.
* Some policies cap the room rent (e.g., ₹5,000/day). Exceeding it can reduce claim amount. Prefer plans with no sub-limits on room rent or ICU charges.
* Look for coverage of at least 60 days pre and 90 days post-hospitalization expenses (like tests, follow-ups, etc.)
* Choose insurers with a wide hospital network in your city for cashless treatment. Confirm if top hospitals near you are on the panel.
* Ensure the plan covers all modern treatments and daycare procedures (like cataract, chemotherapy, dialysis, etc.)
* A co-pay means you pay a portion of the claim (e.g., 20%). Senior citizen policies often have co-payments—try to opt for lower co-pay % if possible.
* Policies offer an increase in sum insured every claim-free year (10%–50%). Choose policies with cumulative NCB and restoration benefits.
* Disclose all health conditions honestly. Non-disclosure may lead to claim rejection. Some plans offer coverage after 2 years for specific ailments—compare before buying.
* For young families, a floater plan is cost-effective. For elderly parents, go for individual coverage to avoid high premium hikes after a claim.
* Many plans offer annual health check-ups after 1-3 claim-free years—an added bonus.

Lifestyle diseases like Cancer, Stroke & Heart Attack have increased in the last 15 years.
Health insurance may cover hospital bills, but when a serious illness strikes, families also face:
💼 Income loss
🏠 EMI pressure
👨👩👧 Family expenses
A Critical Illness Policy gives a lump-sum payout, helping you manage finances during recovery.
💡 Financial protection is not just about hospital bills — it’s about protecting your family’s future.

Real Claim Story | Health Insurance Awareness
In 2022, this family trusted my advice and took a health insurance policy.
In 2025, suddenly the wife of the proposer suffered a severe asthma attack late at night and had to be rushed to the hospital due to breathing difficulty.
Thankfully, the nearest hospital was a Star Health network hospital in Navi Mumbai, and since the policy was already active, the admission process became easier and ICU treatment started immediately.
Total hospital bill: ₹1,26,012
Because it was a network hospital, the cashless claim was approved and ₹98,996 was directly paid by Star Health Insurance to the hospital.
During such a stressful medical emergency, the family didn’t have to worry about arranging a huge amount of money.
This is the real value of having health insurance at the right time.
Health emergencies don’t come with a warning.
That’s why health insurance is not an expense, it is financial protection for your family.
Grateful that I could guide this family at the right time. 🙏

Health insurance is essential, but useless if your claim gets rejected when you need it most.
A recent case showed a claim denied due to a 15-year-old unrelated surgery, despite valid hospitalization. This isn’t rare. 80% of complaints to the Mumbai Insurance Ombudsman relate to health insurance, with claims of ₹2 lakh, ₹50 lakh, even ₹61 lakh rejected.
You pay premiums for years. In emergencies? Fine print decides.
With medical inflation at ~15% annually, one hospital bill can wipe out savings.
Before buying health insurance, check:
• Claim Settlement Ratio (90%+)
• Amount Settlement Ratio

Don’t get distracted by the “freebies.” When you’re choosing a plan in 2026, you need to know what actually saves your bank account during a medical emergency and what is just marketing fluff.
Here is the breakdown of the 10 features you need to check:
🔴 THE NON-NEGOTIABLES (Do not skip!)
• CSR (Claim Settlement Ratio): This tells you the % of claims the company actually pays out. If it’s below 95%, swipe left.
• High Sum Insured: With medical inflation rising at 14–15% annually, a ₹5 Lakh cover won’t cut it. Aim for at least ₹10L–₹20L+.
• Restoration Benefit: If you use your entire limit on one surgery, the insurer “refills” the pot for the next illness. It’s a lifesaver for families. 🔄
• No Sub-Limits: This means there’s no “cap” on specific procedures (like kidney stones or cataracts). You want the insurer to pay the actual cost, not a fixed amount.
🟠 THE IMPORTANT STUFF
• No Room Rent Cap: If your plan caps room rent at 1% of the sum insured, you’ll end up paying “proportionate deductions” on the entire hospital bill. Avoid this at all costs! 🏨
• Waiting Period: The shorter, the better. Look for plans that cover pre-existing diseases in 1–2 years rather than 4.
• NCB (No Claim Bonus): Look for plans that increase your coverage by 50–100% for every year you stay healthy and don’t claim.
• Network Hospitals: Always check if the top hospitals in your city (and near your home) have a “Cashless” tie-up with the insurer.
🟢 THE “NICE-TO-HAVES” (Less Important)
• Free Health Checkups: Good for a yearly routine, but don’t choose a plan just for this.
• Gym Memberships: A great perk for your lifestyle, but it won’t help you when you’re in the ICU. Focus on the core coverage first.
THE PRO TIP: Focus on the Red and Orange categories first. Everything else is just a bonus. 🛡️

One year ago…
A young couple came to me for health insurance.
He is a very good friend of mine.
His first question was very simple —
“Can you get me some discount? Something cheaper?”
And honestly… that’s what most people ask.
Premium kitna hai? Sasta milega?
But I told him one thing —
“Don’t buy a policy because it is cheap.
Buy a policy that actually protects you when life tests you.”
After understanding features, coverage, claim process, hospital network —
they decided to go ahead.
Fast forward to today…
His wife.
Just 31 years old.
A simple fall in the washroom.
Multiple ligament tears.
Hospitalisation.
Surgery.
Total claim approved: ₹2,80,192 ✅
Not from savings.
Not from borrowing.
Not from credit card.
From the policy they almost didn’t buy.
Accidents don’t check age.
Medical emergencies don’t give warnings.
And hospital bills don’t wait.
Health insurance is not an expense.
It is a financial shock absorber for your family.
You may not control what happens tomorrow.
But you can control how prepared you are.
If you are still waiting for “right time”…
This is your sign.
Protect your family before life tests you.
