repost from @90sdecoded Deftones performing “My Own Summer (Shove It)” Live on the 14th of October, 1997 at Nulle part ailleurs An overabundance of sunshine is rarely something associated with notoriously grey and overcast Seattle, but that’s exactly what inspired this song. Deftones recorded their second album, Around the Fur, at Studio Litho in Seattle between April and June 1997. The studio was owned by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, who paused work on the band’s fifth album, Yield, so Deftones could use the space, with Pearl Jam relocating to Studio X elsewhere in the city. The band spent their nights recording and partying, leaving frontman Chino Moreno increasingly frustrated by the morning sunlight pouring through his windows. It became such a nuisance that he covered them with aluminium foil. It was during this period that Moreno wrote the lyrics to the song, contrary to the widespread but unsupported internet claim that they originated during Seattle’s unusually hot summer of 1994. The track itself came together in the studio. The “big star” in the opening line is the literal sun, while the command to “shove it” is directed at telling it to get out of the sky. That was the song’s starting point. As with much of Moreno’s writing, however, the lyrics were deliberately broad enough to take on a more metaphorical meaning. Rather than limiting the song to its real-life inspiration, they leave room for listeners to draw their own interpretations. #Music #Deftones iiii]; )'
Released in 2010 on Deftones’ album Diamond Eyes, “Sextape” became one of the band’s most emotional and atmospheric songs. While Deftones built their reputation with crushing riffs and aggressive energy, this track revealed another side of the band—dreamy, intimate, and deeply emotional. The song blends shimmering guitars, ambient textures, and Chino Moreno’s haunting vocals to create a feeling that’s almost impossible to describe. It’s less about the lyrics and more about the atmosphere it creates. Many listeners describe it as feeling like floating underwater, watching the sunset, or getting lost in a memory that never fades. #Deftones #Sextape #DiamondEyes #HeavyMusic
There's a reason why Diamond Eyes era is widely considered one of the most phenomenal chapters in Deftones history, and this live performance of "Risk" in Dallas is the ultimate proof. Captured on October 12, 2010, this recording perfectly translates intricate studio textures into a raw live environment. Chino Moreno’s performance is spectacular, showcasing his vocal duality as he navigates the haunting, melancholic verses before shifting into a visceral, emotionally charged delivery during the chorus. The live mix emphasizes the sheer scale of the track, offering a heavy sonic weight that gives the composition a completely new dimension. #deftones #risk #diamondeyes #livemusic #chino

Bristow, Virginia — August 23, 1996. Raw 90s energy. "Bored" is the ultimate album opener, but seeing Deftones drop it live back during the Adrenaline era hits entirely different. This show captured the band right at the precipice of their explosion, playing with a raw, visceral hunger that you just can't manufacture in a studio. The chemistry here is insane. You’ve got Chi Cheng (RIP) locking down that heavy, hypnotic bassline, Stephen Carpenter keeping the riffs beautifully thick and minimalist, and Chino Moreno just pacing the stage. The way Chino transitions from those detached, melancholic whispers into that throat-shredding screaming is exactly why this record defined a generation of alternative metal. #deftones #livemusic #adrenaline #altrock #alternative
. . . . . . . #numetal #rock #rockalternativo #metal #heavymetal
Before White Pony changed Deftones’ trajectory forever, Around the Fur had already proven how different the band was. Released in 1997, the album combined crushing riffs, explosive energy, melody, and emotion in a way few bands of the era could match. 🔥🎸 By this 2000 performance at HFStival in Landover, MD, “Around the Fur” was already platinum, and songs like the title track showed just how powerful Deftones could be live. Chino’s unpredictable vocals, Stephen Carpenter’s massive guitar tone, Abe Cunningham’s powerful, precise, and explosive drumming, Chi Cheng’s deep, heavy, and haunting bass lines and the band’s raw energy made this era unforgettable. ⚡🎤 And the crazy part? This happened only weeks before White Pony arrived and opened an entirely new chapter for the band. So… was “Around the Fur” actually heavier than anything on White Pony? 👀🔥 . . “The sound of loving someone who slowly destroys you.” Deftones — “Mascara” (Instrumental Outro) Around the Fur (Released October 28, 1997 via Maverick/Warner) Pinkpop Festival, Megaland, Landgraaf, Netherlands May 31, 1998 Anyone who has ever been trapped in a toxic relationship knows that heavy, hollow exhaustion that hits right after the fighting stops. That’s exactly what makes “Mascara” hit so deep. Lyrically, Chino Moreno wrote it about the ugly, addictive cycle of co-dependency, jealousy, and putting on a fake front to hide emotional damage. But when Deftones played it live at Pinkpop ‘98, it was the instrumental ending that carried the real weight. Once Chino’s vocals drop out, the song shifts into a heavy, atmospheric coda that feels like pure emotional burnout. Tracked originally at Studio Litho in Seattle with producer Terry Date, Stephen Carpenter ran his 6-string through a chorus pedal and a cranked Marshall rig, letting those thick chords decay into ringing feedback while Chi Cheng anchored the low end and Abe Cunningham laid down those crisp rimshots. Instead of rushing into another aggressive track, they let this hypnotic breakdown echo over the massive festival field at Megaland—proving that sometimes the quietest, heaviest moments are the ones that stay with you forever. #Deftones #ChinoMoreno #StephenCarpenter #ChiCheng #AbeCunningham
