Everything’s vibing. I’ve got the headphones on. I’m in the zone. The synths are warm, the Kicks are crispy, the snare is slapping… Then it happens. BZZZ BZZZ. A text. From my girlfriend. Not 1, not 2, but 7 or 8 or 9. They just keeping coming. "SEND" is pressed repeatedly, with no thought or regard. “I’m hungry” And just like that, my whole workflow collapses like a house of Ableton presets. Here's a breakdown of reasons this becomes distracting. Like if you can relate. 1) The Loop Distraction I was layering this perfect 4-bar loop. I was on loop 127. I was almost there. Now I'm scrolling DoorDash trying to remember if she said she was in a “sushi mood” or “not really feeling sushi” earlier. 2) The Sonic Guilt Trip She hits me with, “I haven’t eaten all day” while I’m EQing a hi-hat that no one will even notice in the mix. Suddenly every frequency feels like guilt in surround sound. 3) The Snack vs. Stack Dilemma Do I stack this melody or go get her snacks? I was stacking dreams. Now I’m in the chips aisle debating between spicy Takis and plantain chips that “hit different.” 4) The UberEats Gamble "Just get whatever!" she says. That’s a trap. I know that’s a trap. Now I’m sweating harder than when I tried to master my own songs. 5) The Hangry Countdown Timer Every second that passes, her hunger level is increasing. I’ve got about 17 minutes before she goes from “hungry” to “lowkey mad you didn’t read my mind.” This is high-pressure mixing. Look, I love her. I do. But how am I supposed to finish this Grammy-winning beat if I’m out here being a part-time food psychic? So if my album drops late… blame the hunger texts. Not me.
