Old Damascus is alive. There is continuity of use here. Its old houses are still houses, its souks still souks. Unlike other places, which sanitise something like this or put it behind glass, the old town is itself the museum. An authentic orientalist Disneyland for the intrepid traveller.
Coming from not too far away in Beirut, I've witnessed what a combination of civil war and neoliberal capital can do to a city. Demolition and the pricing-out of residents have been the trend there for thirty years.
Meanwhile Damascus was spared but not necessarily by virtue. A rent law from 1952 froze leases in place and made eviction almost impossible. There was no mortgage market at the time, and no foreign money looking for somewhere to land. Families with money left the old city decades ago for Al-Malki and Abu Rummaneh, and nothing came in to replace them.
Other residents still fill the old town and life is flourishing there. A souk needs people living around it, and so does a hammam. Elsewhere in the world, the souk now sells souvenirs and the hammam is a luxury experience in a hotel spa. In Damascus, it’s just a Tuesday with the boys.
