Damselfly or dragonfly? Look closer.
I have seen this come up a lot, so here is the truth. Not every damselfly folds its wings. Some species rest with their wings open, just like a dragonfly, and that is where the confusion starts.
The real difference is in the face.
Dragonflies have large eyes that meet or almost touch, forming that classic helmet look. Damselflies have clearly separated eyes, giving them a softer, more spaced out appearance.
Both are incredible aerial predators, both play a key role in controlling insect populations, and both deserve a second look before we label them.
Next time you see one resting, do not just look at the wings. Look at the face.

Damselflies are visual predators that typically employ a sit-and-wait hunting strategy, perching on vegetation near water to spot small flying insects before launching a short, rapid pursuit. Once airborne, they use their spiny legs to form a โnetโ that scoops the prey out of the air, which they immediately consume while still in flight or return to a perch to finish.
