I’d use a word in the song or I’d ask a co-worker or student to give me a word, and then I’d use it as inspiration for a move. I thought it would be fun to play it with Kiera and maybe even with YOU! Leave in the comments 3 words - anything that pops into your head. I’ll choose the ones that inspire me and create some choreography for you to try!

🙏🏻💃🏻 Gratitude every day, but singing it loud on Thanksgiving week for what this little video clip of Ella dancing jive represents.
🌎 Grateful that of all the surface area on this great big Earth, Ella connected with @nidanchik in the same coordinates. Ella could not have a better mentor to begin her ballroom journey.
In actuality, the whole ballroom thing is an example of perspective. One of those things in life that wouldn’t have happened had another door not closed.
Ella was devoted to another sport/performance physical activity and loved it, too. Classes, private lessons, camps. But when philosophical differences forced us to walk away, Ella asked to try “partner dancing.”
The concept was so her. She’s already a romantic at heart (although still grossed out when she sees kissing on screen🤢😆) but she definitely loves the concept of love.
She is a performer true and through, and music, movement and rhythm are her life.
Combine all that, and ballroom dancing is the perfect Ella fit.
For now, teacher is partner, since Ella hasn’t found a partner her age and size. She trains and competes partner and solo.
She’s missed two competitions due to acting travel, but this is the balance of Ella’s life. She dances (and sings) all around the house, and it’s a joy to be in her daily audience.

True story . . .
My first dance recital was nothing like Kiera’s this weekend - mine was a total disaster. From what my mom told me I was a total train wreck - crying on the dance floor, running off, running back on, crying some more - everything you hope your kid doesn’t do at their first dance recital.😬😩🤪
The happy ending of that story is that I ended up competitively dancing all the way through college (My team at the @illinois1867 even won the National Championship my senior year!). I worked for @udadance all through college and a few years after (I’ve had several women here on IG reach out to me to tell me I was their instructor at UDA camp😂.), danced for the @NBA in my early 20’s, and earned my living for several years choreographing for high school and college dance teams. Dance is basically how I ended up transitioning into fitness full time when I was hired by @reebok and @cirqudusoleil - combining my love of dance, theater, and fitness. For a good part of my life DANCE WAS MY LIFE, but you definitely wouldn’t have predicted that based on my first performance experience.
My point is that if you too are now a dance mom (or any sport for that matter) I recommend NOT judging HOW your child performs in the early years. It most likely means nothing about their future in said activity.
I think the early years are all about finding activities your kids love doing and encouraging them to have fun. I reminded Kiera on the way to her recital to not worry about the steps - “just smile and have fun.” After all, isn’t that what dancing is truly all about?
P.S. Kiera’s @sophiedancesantamonica class actually danced to “I Survive” (very appropriate considering this past year). #COVIDsilverlining - no sitting around watching a never-ending recital. We attended in 30 minute time slots and only had to watch about 5 dances. So grateful for her teacher @missophiedance for keeping dance alive and fun during COVID.
