A thousand Americans. One day. Every dot is a real person's real diary.
This is the American Time Use Survey, which asks people to account for one entire day, minute by minute, from 4am to 4am. I took the 2024 file, 7,669 diaries, 139,535 recorded activities and drew a thousand of them weighted to be representative, and played them all at once.
Watch for:
• 2:45 AM — 959 of the 1,000 are asleep. That is the fullest any single cluster gets all day.
• The 6-to-9 AM drain. Sleep empties into personal care, then work, travel and school, in that order.
• Noon. The sharpest single spike in the day, and it is people eating.
• 8:55 PM — leisure peaks at 53.9%. More than half the country is relaxing at the same moment.
• Sleep bottoms out at just 31 people, at a quarter past five in the evening.
Across the thousand diaries there are 15,195 moments where somebody changes what they are doing.
THE FORM IS NATHAN YAU'S — 'A Day in the Life of Americans', FlowingData, 2015 — and this is a rebuild of it, rebuilt vertically.
ONE THING IS GENUINELY DIFFERENT AND IT IS THE POINT. The original simulates: it estimates minute-by-minute transition probabilities and runs a Markov chain over 1,000 synthetic people. Elegant, and still a model. This one has no model in it at all. ATUS diaries are already continuous 1,440-minute sequences, so there is nothing to simulate — these are a thousand real days, replayed. Nothing estimated, no transition probability anywhere in the code.
Two caveats. The clock is paced by the data rather than run at a constant rate, so the film lingers where people are moving and hurries the small hours — no minute is omitted, but the speed varies. And every percentage on screen is counted from the thousand dots you can see, not from the wider file, so the number can never drift from the picture.
United States only. This is not how the world spends a day.

A Greek works 537 hours a year more than a Luxembourger and earns two and a half times less. ⏱️
If more hours meant more money, the points would climb from left to right. They fall. Greece works the most in the Union (2 005 hours a year) and is paid the least (26 929). Poland works 2 001 hours, Croatia 1 955, Portugal 1 912.
Germany works the fewest hours of anyone (1 345) and earns 49 857. Denmark works 1 366 for 51 499, the Netherlands 1 453 for 52 794. Luxembourg works 1 467 and tops the pay axis at 68 349.
Slovakia works 1 630 hours, a little above the EU average of 1 612, and earns 33 283 against an average of 45 807. Above average in hours, far below it in money.
How it is calculated: hours worked are the average per person in employment over a year, part-time jobs included. Pay is the total annual cost of an employee including contributions, converted to the same purchasing power so prices in different countries can be compared.
If hours do not decide pay, what does? Tell us in the comments 👇

🚂 Poland’s railways, built at their real dates — 1842 → today.
Look at the mesh and you’ll see the partitions 🗺️ The dense west was Prussian, the sparse east Russian, the south Austro-Hungarian. Poland only exists from 1918, but its rail map was drawn by three empires before it.

In 1940 not a single day was 1.5°C above pre-industrial. In 2024 there were 281.
Every day since 1940 is drawn here as one spiral: one loop per year, and the further a day sits from the center, the warmer it was.
Flattened, the years hide behind each other. So watch what happens when you pull them apart along time. It opens into a funnel, narrow and blue in the 1940s, flaring red now, bursting out of the 1.5°C ring it first touched in October 2015.
The ten warmest years on record are the last ten.

Pie charts produce errors. Studies confirm the brain compares lengths more accurately than angles.
Around 5 segments, no 3D. Once you exceed 5, a bar chart with a shared zero baseline is more readable.

In 1917, half of the Italian men who died were younger than 26.
That is the First World War, and you can see it happen: a spike on the men's half of the chart at about age twenty, with nothing matching it on the women's side. The Second World War tears the same hole again.
Around them childhood death drains away, and the whole distribution slides right until half of women are living past 86.
Women above the line, men below. Sweden, which sat out both wars, has no such scar.

Details from “Shapes of Inequality”, my installation designed for @triennalemilano’s 24th International Exhibition “Inequalities” - on view until November 9.
I designed more than ten large data visualization to depict different shapes of inequalities, from economic disparities to global warming, from social mobility and discriminations related to ethnicity and gender, to biodiversity and biocommunity.
The exhibition design is by Midori Hasuike (@midori_hasuike), editing by Veronica Vannini (@vev425).

1,551 people day-traded the same market for 300+ days. 97% lost money. 📉
I gave 10,000 simulated traders a perfect coin and a $5 toll per trade. Luck grows like a square root. The toll grows in a straight line. At trade 400, they meet, and after that the line wins.
The twist: before costs, my coin-flippers did better than the real traders.

A bit of a different video this week. I have been dabbling into data animation on the web over the past couple of weeks using d3. Link in the bio to the interactive version of this visualization.
In this first interactive bar chart race that I post we look at the top 10 biggest economies from 1960 to 2021. Although the United States fills the number 1 spot for the entirety of this period, we can see a lot of movement during this period. A lot of countries come and go, even The Netherlands, where I am from originally, makes it briefly in the top 10. Additionally, keep an eye on China.

You picture Manhattan as glass towers. Watch every building appear in the year it was finished, oldest to newest, and almost the whole island lights up in one wave: roughly 1900 to 1930. The supertall skyline everyone pictures barely moves the count. The glass towers are a thin, recent layer on a city that was mostly finished a hundred years ago.
Each building is colored by the year it was built. Data: NYC Building Footprints, Dept. of City Planning.
