Here’s the story of the Forty Five Original Mile Datsun: The car came to me through an estate. The original owner was a Datsun mechanic who bought it new for his wife. She took one look at it and declared it the ugliest thing she’d ever seen. So he quietly parked it in their garage—and there it sat, untouched, until this year. I found it online, where most of the comments were about racing it or tuning it. Instead, I called the seller and shared my history designing for the brand, my love for the model, and my intention to treat it not as a project car, but as a piece of modern art. Andrew and I found her about a month ago and had her transported to Peter—the same brilliant restoration expert who rebuilt my Tercel Wagon. While she’d been stored in a garage since new, never filled with a full tank of gas and never even wearing a license plate, she still needed a careful cleaning. Peter’s been gently bringing her back, honoring exactly what she is. Now she’s clean, preserved, and ready to move into the Holly House with the rest of our family.
