If you’re in San Diego this summer, spending a day at @delmarracing is one of the Best Things to Do in San Diego.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to maximize your day!
Step one, come inside and head straight for the paddock; that’s where you can see the horses before each race and see who looks ready to compete.
Once you match the horses with their race position, check for any last-minute scratches, and pretend like you have any idea of what you’re looking for…
Now, It’s time to place your bets.
There’s an app you can use, or kiosks around the campus, but I personally like going to a real life parimutuel - where they’ll talk you through each play.
With wagers locked in, if you got here early enough, you’ll have time to explore before the first race.
Grab something to eat at Tanner’s Prime Burgers, Pacifico Porch, or Aloha Rib Shack.
Then, make your way through to the track.
The horn sounds and the horses are off!
And if you’re lucky you’ll pick a winner.
From here, go pick up your winnings, and reload for the next race.
Repeat as many times as your nerves and wallet will allow,
and then finish the day with a celebratory drink up at the tracks own secret speakeasy.
