The album contained their biggest hit, "Whip It", which hit No. 8 and No. 14 on the Billboard Club Play Singles and Pop Singles charts, respectively. Freedom of Choice peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart.According to the band's commentary on The Complete Truth About De-Evolution DVD, the lyrics of "Whip It" began as a tongue-in-cheek anthem for then-president Jimmy Carter, and were also inspired by Norman Vincent Peale's 1952 book The Power of Positive Thinking and the "can do philosophy" espoused within.Devo co-songwriter and bass guitarist Gerald Casale also told Songfacts that the lyrics were written by him "as an imitation of Thomas Pynchon's parodies in his book Gravity's Rainbow".The lyric of "That's Pep!" is based on an early 20th-century poem by Grace G. Bostwick. Music historian Andy Zax later observed that, "Beneath the shiny surface of Freedom of Choice, the band's ability to dissect the de-evolving world around it remained as incisive as ever."

🚨WE MUST ROLL BACK DEVOLUTION, SAYS SHADOW WELSH SECRETARY🚨 Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Mims Davies was asked if devolution has failed earlier. She did not hold back. Davies said we must “roll back the frontiers of those devolved areas”. Hear, hear. Davies made the perfectly reasonable point that, under devolution, powers have been handed to the Senedd and outcomes have been forgotten. Looking at NHS waiting lists and performance in Welsh schools, it’s hard to argue with her. The Shadow Secretary of State then went on to criticise “wanton spending”, citing the hundreds of millions spent on more Senedd members and the £10,000 grant to “decolonise the Welsh cake”. She’s not wrong. Davies then attacked the state of the health service, saying “everybody knows somebody who’s waiting in pain and in vain in Wales because of the NHS that’s been devolved”. As we’ve always said, the Senedd is to blame for waiting lists in Wales. After 26 years, the consensus among the parties that the Senedd has been good for Wales is collapsing before our eyes. This is good to see. For too long, we’ve faced poor public services while Senedd members have made Wales a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers. Senedd members have proven they won’t deliver for Wales with the powers they have. But thanks to the new voting system, another Plaid-Labour coalition is all but guaranteed. Only next time, Rhun ap Iorwerth’s anti-Wales party will be the senior partner. Taking powers off the Senedd is likely to be the only way around the Plaid-Labour stitch up. If that’s what it takes to improve our public services, and actually put Wales first, then that’s what must be done. #devolution #senedd #immigration #gravytrain #wales
