This is the follow-up to my last post, where I rigged the front view of a new character for my animated vampire comedy in Toon Boom Harmony. Now I’m working on creating the profile and 3/4 views. I start by copying the front-view frame onto the profile frame. Then start moving and deforming the shapes to match my profile sketch. While doing this, I usually discover problems with my rig and have to make some tweaks. It might be that I forgot to put the peg in the right place, or something isn’t moving the way it should. Or it might be that I need to add a new drawing layer. Once the profile pose is complete, then I move on to the 3/4 view and repeat the process. Moving and deforming. I will flip between the frames to make sure it’s working from one pose to the next, and nothing looks too wonky. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be perfect! It’s okay if something is slightly out of place or if it doesn’t turn perfectly smooth. The thing I love about traditional animation is that it’s flawed. Lines crawl and wobble. We can see the human touch, and I want to try and keep that alive here as well. For now, I only plan to do these three views, since the scenes I’m imagining don’t require a back view or a 3/4 back view. If I end up needing them down the road, I’ll add them. I will also need to create a library of hand shapes once I have a better idea of what the character will be doing in their scenes. Thanks for watching, and enjoy the weekend!
