A âpremarital retirement statementâ is the statement showing the balance of your retirement account right before you got married. In many states, you can carve that our as your separate property. Plus ask for the growth on that account!

Forfeiting their rights to a spouseâs 401(k).
It usually happens in uncontested divorces, where both spouses want to move on quickly and avoid conflict.
They agree on custody, the house, even the carsâŠ
But when retirement accounts come up, one spouse says, âThatâs their account. I donât want to start a fight.â
But, retirement accounts are often the largest marital asset a couple owns, especially after 20+ years together.
Even if the account is only in one spouseâs name, the portion earned during the marriage is considered marital property in most states.
What happens when retirement accounts are ignored:
1. The divorce agreement is finalized without addressing the 401(k).
2. The plan administrator never receives a court order to divide it (a QDRO).
3. Years later, one spouse retires while the other realizes theyâve lost out on decades of shared savings.
When I work with clients, I make sure retirement assets are discussed early and clearly, before anything is signed.
If youâre finalizing a divorce and havenât reviewed how retirement will be handled, itâs worth a conversation.

Divorce is a big life change, not just a legal process. In Massachusetts, it starts by filing a divorce complaint to begin your case and help the court move forward step by step.
If youâre feeling unsure, talking with a divorce lawyer early can help you understand your options, prepare the right papers, and protect your rights as you make important decisions.

Iâve had a day. And if youâre in family court right now, I know you probably have too.
Hereâs the truth no one loves hearing:
You can be frustrated with the system.
You can think itâs inefficient.
You can think it doesnât make sense.
All of that can be true at the same time as this đ
There are things you are required to do in a family law case.
Mandatory disclosure.
Mediation.
Addressing issues you donât think should even be on the table.
You donât get to opt out just because you donât like them or donât understand why they matter. Thatâs not how this system works.
And hereâs where I need to be very clear:
đ Your lawyer is not the villain for telling you to follow the rules.
đ Your lawyer is not âslowing things downâ by insisting you do what the court requires.
đ Your lawyer cannot bypass steps just because youâre fed up.
Frustration with the process? Completely valid.
Taking it out on the person trying to guide you through it? Misplaced.
Family court is procedural. Whether you agree with it or not, the rules still apply. Fighting the process only makes your case harderâand more expensive.
This isnât about blame.
Itâs about reality.
And reality is: some parts of this journey are not optional.

How long will my divorce take? It is one of the most common questions we hear.
On average, a Connecticut divorce takes about 12 months, but it could be more or less depending on factors both in and out of your control. If you have questions about the timeline or process, we will always tell you the truth.

Why is your divorce taking so long? Blame slow paperwork, backlogged courts, and tricky details like assets, custody, and support. Patience helps, but you can speed things up with organized documents and clear goals. âłđïžâïžâ

i hope she knows how thankful i am that she has the courage to make the hard decisions that werenât pretty all those years ago so we can live this life now
i hope she knows i look up to her for being so strong and breaking her own heart to heal
and i hope she knows i still think about her even when im happiest and healthy and especially when i feel so loved
i remember wondering what life would look like after, how things would change, how i would be different. who i would become on my own as i left a place, person, moment, and celebration.
and now, after the adventure and the changes and the moving away and learning - it was worth every moment of doubt, uncertainty, denial and fear.
life was been wonderful since then, in so many different ways. itâs been really mf hard, in so many new ways, but it has been the best version iâve created for myself and sometimes i sit back and i just canât believe that we actually made it this far and continuing to sludge through it
for whoever, whenever, however, trust yourself and go. find something new whether it be a place, a hobby, a discovery - pick it for yourself, do it for yourself. remember you can try and change your mind. you can pick something up and put it back down. you can love something and not be great at it but if your heart is in it, thatâs the experience.
and my usual reminder - you can be happy and sad at the same time. you can mourn a loss and celebrate a beginning. you can grow, even if it feels like losing.
cry. journal. remember the moments you thought would last an eternity. capture the times youâre happiest and loved.
this is the human experience and there is no playbook
