DJ Premier lays one kick on the 1, then he turns the metronome off. Most producers rely on the grid for the entire drum pattern, but producers like Premo simply use it as a reference point. “The start point is there now.” Notice how the groove develops before it’s perfectly filled in. He only adds a simple snare pattern before Mark Ronson begins to add piano chords. Only after that does Premo go back and fill the empty gaps where he hears the kick belongs. Sequencing with instinct. Creative takeaway: Tools are meant to guide and not trap you. The groove exists when you humanize the feeling. 🎥 Source: Beats’ YouTube Channel 🎤 Artist(s) Featured: @djpremier & @iammarkronson
What’s your favorite track from Nas and DJ Premier’s latest album? My personal favorite is GiT Ready🔥 @nas @djpremier #djmichelle #nas #djpremier #hiphop #dj
Nas & DJ Premier’s "Nas Is Like" (1999) 🎤🔥 The Backstory: This track wasn't just another single; it was a "return to form" for Nas. After moving toward a more commercial sound, he teamed back up with DJ Premier to prove he was still the king of lyricism. This video captures the raw essence of Queensbridge and the clinical precision of 90s boom-bap. Educative Breakdown for Your Audience: The "Uncopyable" Flow 🌊 As noted in the video, Nas’s flow on this track is incredibly complex. He uses "Internal Rhyming"—placing rhymes in the middle of lines, not just at the end. Example: "Asinine / Character, line / After line / Fanatic, I / Smash the rhyme..." He manages to maintain a "stream-of-consciousness" feel while hitting every snare with mathematical accuracy. DJ Premier’s "Trash to Treasure" Production 🎹 The main string sample was famously found by Premier on a record he initially thought was "trash." He chopped a tiny, obscure portion of a 1966 track called "What Child Is This?" by John Gary. For nearly 10 years, "cratediggers" couldn't find where the sample came from because the flip was so technical. The "Scratch" Chorus 🎧 The chorus isn't sung; it’s "performed" by DJ Premier using vocal scratches from previous Nas songs like "It Ain't Hard to Tell" and "Street Dreams." This is a masterclass in Turntablism—using the turntable as a melodic instrument. Technical Note for Artists & DJs: 🎧 Tempo: The track sits at roughly 93 BPM, the "sweet spot" for East Coast boom-bap. The Mix: Notice how dry the vocals are in the video. In the 90s, the focus was on the "punch" of the kick drum and the clarity of the rhyme, without the heavy reverb or autotune seen in modern tracks. #nas #hiphopactivity #hiphop #like #instagram music hiphopmusic 90smusic classic legendary legend hiphoplegend
DJ Premier = scratch chorus 🐐. Here’s one of my favourite patterns of all time. Was having a Parrrty on my last stream and came across the section he used, so we paid homage as well as adding some sauce to the mix. The inspiration continues. #DJPremierScratchChallenge #DJPremierSkratchChallenge Salute to @djpremier 🫡

Back in the 80s & 90s, DJs weren’t just in the background… they were ON THE TRACK LIST 😂🎧 Every rap album had that one song like: “Yo… let the DJ talk to ‘em real quick.” You heard them on the radio, on the intro, or straight up destroying turntables mid-song like it was a competitive sport. Scratches so nasty you had to rewind the cassette because you thought your tape broke 😭 My top DJs (no order, all legends): 🎚️ DJ Jazzy Jeff 🎚️ Terminator X 🎚️ Funkmaster Flex 🎚️ DJ Premier 🎚️ Kid Capri 🎚️ Honorary 6th: Marley Marl If your DJ didn’t get a whole track dedicated to them… was the album even complete? 🤷🏾‍♂️🔥 Real ones remember. @djjazzyjeff @funkflex @kidcapri101 @djpremier @djterminatorx @djmarleymarl

Nas – “Nas Is Like” Released in 1999, “Nas Is Like” is produced by DJ Premier and appears on Nas’ third studio album I Am…. Built around Premier’s chopped piano loop and stripped drum programming, the record marked a return to raw lyricism after the commercial pressure surrounding It Was Written. Lyrically, Nas delivers a dense, stream-of-consciousness performance that references street politics, religion, inner-city survival, and hip-hop culture with minimal hooks and no concessions to radio trends. The video, directed by Hype Williams, reinforces the song’s grounded tone, placing Nas in everyday urban settings rather than stylized spectacle. “Nas Is Like” is widely regarded as one of the definitive DJ Premier–Nas collaborations and a late-90s benchmark for pure lyric-driven hip-hop. #90srap #realhiphop #undergroundhiphop #boombap #goldenera #classicrap #hiphopheads #oldschoolhiphop #hiphoparchive #rarehiphop

When I was coming up as a kid digging in the crates, I learned so much by listening to Jazz records more than I even realized at the time. Reading the credits, learning the musicians and putting two and two together. Hearing how producers like Q-Tip, Large Pro, Dj Premier & Pete Rock used pieces and bits from these complex compositions to make hip hop hits was very inspiring to a young aspiring producer. With this full circle moment, I would like to say that I am more than honored to be a part of one of the most innovative and visionary Jazz musicians of our time - the incredible @RobertGlasper ‘s latest album, Code Derivation, where I had the chance to reimagine the powerful ‘Madiba’ Code Derivation is largely made up of two versions of the same tracks—one played live in studio by Glasper’s band and a version “flipped” by a producer of his choosing. Thank you RG for allowing me to put my twist on “MADIBA” in real time. Your talent, dedication, and passion are what make producing and the art of sampling so rewarding. Thank you for your hard work and creativity 👊🏾🙏🏾 🥁 🎺🎻🎹 #Madiba Check it out‼️ EXCLUSIVELY on Apple Music #CodeDerivation #MusicCollaboration” #digginginthecrates
