Our most asked question at the moment is - how did you start and grow your dog walking business? We get so many lovely DM’s and I’ve been trying to get back to everyone 🫶🏻
The truth is I started five years ago from my little fiat 500 🚗 with no business experience, limited experience walking packs of dogs and TONS of enthusiasm 🙌🏻
Our top 5 tips for starting out are;
🐾 educate, learn, absorb as much as you can. Spend time with other dog walkers, dog trainers, listen to podcasts, follow dog based accounts and content, read books! The more you know, the more prepared you will be around your dogs and also to have informed conversations with clients.
🐾 pick your niches and services and keep them TIGHT - don’t try to cover walking, sitting, cat feeds, solo walks, group walks - master a few services, fill your books and add additional services in once you have your core structure
🐾 this is personal and potentially BAD business advice but I’ve ALWAYS lead with service first - put the dogs and clients at the centre of everything you do and finances will align (more on this to come)
🐾 really do invest in good walking gear and equipment, a good walking belt, walking shoes and thick poo bags can make your day 100000x better
🐾 realise early on that you can’t be the right dog walker for everyone and that’s ok, some people will specialise in groups, others in solo walks, others in reactive dogs, working breeds… it’s impossible to be the right dog walker for everyone and finding your niche helps you attract the right customers for you 🩷

- If you have an idea just GO FOR IT… there is literally never a right time to take the leap - I thought about starting a dog walking business for 3 years before I was brave enough to leave a full time career 🤞🏻
- You get out what you put in, if you work really really hard it will pay off 🙏🏻
- be patient - things take time to build 💪🏻
- clients are also just people and lots of them will become your close friends 🩷
- shouting about your own business and being relentless with your own marketing isn’t cringey AT ALL - no one actually cares and if they do they’re mean x
- You will literally fall in love with your clients dogs, and it’s the most beautiful thing ever 🩷 I feel like I have 50 bonus dogs in my life 🫶🏻
- wear SPF every day 😘
- Invest in GOOD water proofs and walking boots - they’ll save your life 🙌🏻
- sometimes things go wrong and you have to take steps backwards before you can go forwards, and that’s OK. This year we’ve had to pause a lot of boarding until I’ve moved house and at first it felt world ending, but we’re still here 🙏🏻
- you aren’t going to be the right dog walker for everyone and that’s SO FINE!
- price rises are inevitable and they reflect the care and investment you put into your business 🤞🏻🙌🏻
- building a team of gorgeous staff is the best thing you’ll ever do 🙌🏻
- never ever stop educating yourself 💡
- heatwaves are probably going to ruin your life at some point so make sure you plan for those 👀
- ENJOY EVERY DAY - we’re so lucky to be able to call this crazy career work 🩷
