Romance on the High Seas (1948) had been conceived with Judy Garland and Betty Hutton in mind, but when both were unavailable director Michael Curtiz decided to meet a singer without any acting experience- Doris Day. While preparing for her first screen test, Day felt that Curtiz was directing her to sing in Betty Hutton’s larger-than-life style. But when they shot the test, Day did it her way- and got the part. “I guess I instinctively understood something then that was to sustain me through all the years of acting that followed- to thine own self be true,” Day recalled. “Don’t imitate. Don’t try to imagine how someone else might feel…. I am always exactly what I am, I always show exactly how I feel. If I am happy, I bloom with it. If I am depressed or grouchy, everyone around me knows it.” 💫 For more gems, check out my book THIS WAS HOLLYWOOD. Available wherever you get your books (LINK IN BIO)!!!💫 #dorisday

Consistency comes at a COST. Doris Day and Myrna Loy in MIDNIGHT LACE ('60).
Happy birthday Doris Day! Some of my earliest memories growing here was spotting Doris Day riding her bike around Beverly Hills. We drove by her house on Crescent practically every day (we lived only a few blocks away). She’d always be crossing the train tracks south of Santa Monica with a basket full of groceries (from Jurgenson’s as I recall). We’d run into her at local neighborhood haunts such as “Ah Fong’s”, “Home Savings & Loan” and the “Old World”. They didn’t call it ‘Doris Day Parking’ for nothing. Summers were never the same when she moved to Carmel, because a Doris Day sighting would always make your day. #DorisDay #VintageLosAngeles

Happy heavenly birthday to Doris Day! She started out as a band singer and made it all the way to the top of the motion picture industry. I think it’s easy to overlook what a fantastic and gifted (and swinging) vocalist she was and to prove that point here’s a great clip from one of her first films “My Dream Is Yours” (1949). The song is “Someone Like You” written by Harry Warren and Ralph Blane and her costar is Jack Carson. Wasn’t she beautiful? And those eyes! The camera sure loved her. #dorisday #mydreamisyours #someonelikeyou #harrywarren #ralphblane #jackcarson #warnerbros #technicolor
There was a special warmth to the musicals of the 1950s—the kind that made a movie feel less like a performance and more like a memory. In By The Light of The Silvery Moon (1953), Doris Day and Gordon MacRae brought that feeling to the screen with a blend of romance, music, and family charm. Joined by Mary Wickes and Rosemary DeCamp, the film captured the gentle optimism that defined so many beloved Hollywood musicals of the era. The movie was part of a memorable creative partnership between Doris Day and director David Butler. Together, they made six films, beginning with It’s a Great Feeling (1949) and continuing through favorites like Tea for Two (1950), Lullaby of Broadway (1951), April in Paris (1952), and their final collaboration, Calamity Jane (1953). What made these films special wasn’t only the songs or the colorful sets—it was the feeling they created. A simpler kind of storytelling where kindness, music, and a little bit of optimism could carry an entire film. Some movies remind us of a time we lived through. Others remind us of a time we wish we had. 🌙 What Doris Day movie brings back the strongest memories for you? #RememberHowItFelt #DorisDay #GordonMacRae #ClassicHollywood #MovieMusicals

This is a rhetorical question. 😉 Doris Day and Rock Hudson in PILLOW TALK (‘59).
“Secret Love" is a legendary pop standard famously introduced by Doris Day in her 1953 musical film Calamity Jane. The song features music composed by Sammy Fain and lyrics written by Paul Francis Webster. Remarkably, Doris Day recorded the iconic track in just a single take on August 5, 1953. The song soared to number 1 on both the US and UK charts and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 26th Academy Awards in 1954.
Before she was America's sunniest movie star, she was already a two-time number one hit maker who had never set foot on a film set. 🎤 Doris Day, born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, sang with Les Brown's band and topped the charts in 1945 with Sentimental Journey before Hollywood ever called. Decades later, off camera, she poured her fame into animal welfare, cofounding Actors and Others for Animals and her own foundation, and she was known to stop production cold if the animals on set weren't properly cared for. 🐾 Did you know her as the movie star first, or the singer who came before her? #DorisDay #ClassicHollywood #GoldenAgeOfHollywood #VintageAmericana #ClassicMusic
