What just happened in Brazil!!
Finally got around to filming a lil chatty video about how I got into conservation! Let me know if you have any questions at all, I’d be super happy to try and answer them 🐝🌿🌸
I started my job 4 years ago after getting some ecological volunteer experience and studying physical geography - but honestly, there’s no defined route into the field! It’s such a diverse area to work in, and there are so many skills that are required for conservation - community engagement, data management, species ID, fence building, managing donations, report writing - the list goes on and on! If it’s something you’d genuinely like to pursue, my best piece of advice is to get some volunteer experience. There are so many places across the UK and beyond that need volunteers and it’s the best way to get a proper feel for what a day working in conservation can look like! 💚

Have you heard of this ultra-rare plant that only grows in this special Texas river?

Do you feel like a tree?
Not actually like a tree, But like, if something happened to the trees in a forest, would it feel like something happened to you?
The Norwegian philosopher Arne Næss coined the term “deep ecology”.
It is opposed to “shallow ecology”, which focuses on how we can make growth look green, or how we can continue our normal lives but with fewer emissions.
Deep ecology, however, focuses on what kind of life is worth living on a finite planet, and what happens when we treat everything that isn’t human as a resource.
“Your motivation comes from your total view,so that when you’re working in favour of free nature, you feel you’re working for something within your “self” that demands it. You’re motivated from what I call deeper premises.””
For Næss, deep ecology was about widening your sense of self until “you” includes the forest, the river, every species you’re entangled with.
self-realization beyond the human ego
If you are interested in learning more about Arne Næss (he was a funny and really interesting guy), I think this interview is a great place to start: https://web.archive.org/web/20110727112722/http://www.naturearteducation.org/Interview_Arne_Naess_1995.pdf

Ecology Has A Dress Code For Every Habitat 🌳🦺👓
Ecology is one of the few careers where your outfit can completely change from one hour to the next. Different surveys, sites and roles all require different PPE, equipment and clothing to keep both the ecologist and wildlife safe, while allowing surveys to be carried out correctly and professionally.
From full PPE on active construction sites as an ECoW, to waders and life jackets for water vole surveys around deep watercourses, climbing equipment for inspecting potential bat roost features, smart office attire for report writing and meetings, and practical outdoor clothing for long days carrying out reptile and bird surveys in all weather conditions, every role comes with its own kit list.
One career, countless roles, and a dress code for every habitat.
