Installed in a villa near the Cinecittà studios with her children and her staff and the particular organized chaos of a major studio production trying to rebuild itself around a star who had almost not survived to make it. Richard Burton arrived on set in January 1962. The Italian paparazzi, who understood the situation before most of the people involved in it did, named them Liz and Dick. The names traveled the world within weeks. What happened between them during the Cleopatra production has been written about extensively and understood imperfectly, which is appropriate for something that neither of them ever fully explained. What is documented is that they came to Rome for a film and left with each other. And that Rome, which has been holding the stories of extraordinary people for two thousand years, held this one with the particular care it reserves for things that deserve to be remembered.
