That moment when your bodyâs like wait..⌠that actually wasnât okay.
This is how it often begins⌠with lil cracks in the narrative, where humor was protecting something that deserved a lot more care than it got.
If youâre starting to see your past in a new light, you dont have to sort through it by yourself.
đ Save this for when something clicks later
đ Share it with someone whoâs been rethinking their childhood
đ Or ďżź message me â EMDRâ if youâre ready to gently start unpacking it

EMDR therapy is often described as more than exposure. Emerging neuroscience suggests that when a memory is reactivated, it can enter a temporary state of malleability â a process known as memory reconsolidation (Nader & Hardt, 2009; Haubrich & Nader, 2016).
During EMDR, a distressing memory is held in mind while attention is simultaneously engaged through bilateral stimulation. Because working memory has limited capacity, this dual engagement appears to reduce the vividness and emotional intensity of the recalled memory (Lee & Cuijpers, 2013).
Neuroimaging research further shows that after successful EMDR treatment, patterns of neural activation shift. Studies report decreased activation in limbic regions associated with threat and emotional reactivity (such as the amygdala) and increased engagement of prefrontal cortical regions involved in regulation, integration, and cognitive control (Pagani et al., 2015; Boukezzi et al., 2017; Landin-Romero et al., 2018). These findings align with broader models of systems consolidation, in which memories become more integrated within cortical networks over time rather than remaining predominantly limbically driven.
Whether EMDR operates primarily through reconsolidation, working memory taxation, orienting responses, or overlapping mechanisms remains under active investigation. What is well supported is its clinical efficacy for PTSD and trauma-related distress.
The science continues to evolve. But attention, memory activation, and neural integration are not separate processes â they are deeply interconnected.
Note: EMDR is a structured psychotherapy and should only be conducted by a licensed, trained clinician. The equipment alone is not the treatment. Proper assessment, preparation, and stabilization â especially when dissociation is present â are essential for safe and effective trauma processing.

When Prince Harry shared that he has done EMDR, it opened the door for a bigger conversation. As an EMDR therapist, I joke that it is not Meghanâit is EMDR. Because when a core belief like âI donât matterâ shifts into âI do matter,â you stop overextending, people pleasing, and tolerating environments that reinforce the old story. You begin setting boundaries, choosing differently, and showing up in ways that actually reflect your worth. That is how powerful it can be when long standing negative cognitions are reprocessed and replaced with something more adaptive.
Disclaimer: This is said with humor and is not a literal claim about his reasons for leaving. It is a way to highlight how life changing EMDR can be. This modality helps people reprocess traumatic experiences and deeply rooted beliefs that shape how they see themselves and relate to others. When those beliefs shift, your relationships, decisions, and sense of self often shift with them. This is for educational purposes only, not a replacement for therapy.

Most people donât realize what they missed growing up⌠until adulthood starts feeling harder than it should.
Here are 10 experiences you might not have had if you grew up emotionally neglected âŹď¸
1ď¸âŁ someone helping you make sense of your emotions
2ď¸âŁ being known beyond being âeasy,â âgood,â or âindependentâ
3ď¸âŁ having your feelings mirrored back to you
4ď¸âŁ learning what your needs actually are
5ď¸âŁ being allowed to be inconvenient sometimes
6ď¸âŁ someone helping your nervous system settle
7ď¸âŁ being comforted without having to earn it
8ď¸âŁ feeling like your emotions mattered in your family
9ď¸âŁ seeing healthy repair after conflict
đ space to become who you are⌠not just who others needed
A lot of this isnât obvious when youâre a kid.
It just becomes your normal.
And then one day youâre an adult wondering why things feel so hard, confusing, or exhausting.
If this is you, you didnât make it up.
You adapted to what was missing.

The nervous system can rewire using light, sound, sensation and movement.
Just like EMDR uses light to help the brain process and integrate, we can use light over the body to gently guide the nervous system back toward the places it disconnected during overwhelm, chronic stress or trauma.
When those areas begin to âcome back online,â
clients often feel more grounded, present and safe in their own body again.

One of the most meaningful lessons in Inside Out is that joy alone couldnât calm Rileyâs anxiety and emotional overwhelm.
As a therapist, I see this often in real life. When the nervous system feels overloaded or unsafe, simply trying to âstay positiveâ usually isnât enough. Anxiety cannot be healed by forcing happiness on top of pain.
Healing begins when emotions are acknowledged instead of avoided.
In Inside Out, Riley starts finding balance when her emotions are finally allowed to be felt, expressed, and understood. Sadness creates connection. Vulnerability opens the door to support. Emotional processing helps restore regulation.
Thatâs why I believe every emotion serves a purpose, even the uncomfortable ones. We donât heal by rejecting parts of ourselves. We heal by understanding them with compassion.
Sometimes healing isnât about getting rid of emotions. Itâs about learning how to safely move through them.
What are your thoughts on this?
