Heartbreaking story of the devastating impact of fraternity hazing. Danny Santulli, a freshman at the University of Missouri, was permanently disabled after being forced to drink an entire bottle of vodka during a fraternity ritual. Despite being unconscious and unresponsive, his fraternity brothers failed to call 911, leaving him alone until he suffered severe brain damage. “America’s leading hazing attorney” David Bianchi, who has represented dozens of hazing victims, called this “the worst fraternity hazing injury there has ever been.” The Santulli family is now fighting to pass “Danny’s Law” to encourage people to seek help for hazing victims without fear of prosecution. This tragic case highlights the urgent need to end the dangerous and illegal practice of hazing on college campuses. It inspired me to create a visual for my new piece, "I Wonder What He Felt." When I wrote it, I wanted people to see Caleb Wilson as more than just a name or a victim. I wanted to help people understand a snippit of the horrific experience he endured. In just three days, this story has reached nearly 4 million views. It has resonated with so many people, and I’m honored to be able to tell it. . . . If your child or student is being hassled at school, try these two quick strategies to help them get out of a sticky situation. Remind them: • They never have to stay in a situation that feels toxic. • If they’re free to leave, they should. Tip 1: Act shocked. Say something like: • “Wow, I can’t believe you just said that.” • “Whoa, do you really mean that?” This puts the focus back on the person trying to embarrass or shame them. Tip 2: Nod slowly with a confused look. Then shift their attention to something else. Ignore the comment like it didn’t matter. This signals: “That’s not worth my time.” Want more tools to help kids build and keep healthy friendships? Follow for daily support from a school counselor. Comment “link” and I’ll send you the links to three ways to help your kids learn to recognize, respond, recover, and rise above relational aggression—so they can respectfully and effectively stand up for themselves and others.
