For too many kids, the ride to school comes with hidden health harms. The yellow school bus is an icon of childhood - recognized the world over - but most run on diesel, exposing children to toxic exhaust linked to breathing problems, asthma, and increased cancer risk. Pollution levels can actually be higher inside the bus than on the roadside, as exhaust is drawn directly into the vehicle. Kids are especially vulnerable because of their developing lungs and higher breathing rates. The good news? There’s a solution already on the road. 🚌⚡ For Our Kids (@forourkidscanada) - a group of Canadian parents and caregivers - are pushing to electrify Canada’s school bus fleets. Electric buses emit zero exhaust, and each one saves 17-20 tonnes of CO₂ per year compared to a diesel bus. They are also much healthier. School districts can receive significant funding to purchase or repower electric school buses and install charging infrastructure. Up to $3.3 million will be awarded in this round. Applications are open now through June 18, 2026. Details and the RFP are available on our website. An informational webinar will be held April 9 from 1 to 2 p.m. Registration is available on the RFP page.
