“Cheri, Cheri Lady” foi composta por Dieter Bohlen, a metade produtora e compositora do Modern Talking. Mas havia outro músico importante naquela gravação: o tecladista Ralf Stemmann, especialmente audível na faixa, nunca recebeu crédito oficial pelo trabalho — algo que só anos depois viria à tona como motivo de atrito.
A música integrou o segundo álbum de estúdio da dupla, *Let’s Talk About Love*, lançado em outubro de 1985 pela Hansa, com produção de Bohlen ao lado de Luis Rodríguez. O Modern Talking havia sido formado em Berlim em 1983 por Bohlen e o vocalista Thomas Anders.
Lançada como single em 2 de setembro de 1985, “Cheri, Cheri Lady” chegou ao topo das paradas na Alemanha, Áustria, Noruega e Suíça, além de entrar no top 10 na Bélgica e na Suécia.
