How can we use emerging technologies to improve urban design processes and make them more participatory? By leveraging our expertise in experience design and creative technology, our innovation team has developed AIRE, an extended reality urban experience. It allows users to explore and interact with different urban design scenarios – all while moving through actual urban space. We set up our first test site in front of our studio on Basel’s Campus of the Arts. Wearing extended reality glasses, users can look at the skyline of the future as well as open spaces and ground floor levels of buildings. They can explore and interact with show apartments, give feedback on proposed designs, or influence different scenarios for a public park. We will continue to develop AIRE over the coming months. We also expect major advances in hardware, making the experience of urban space even more immersive and participation even more intuitive. With the announcement of the launch of Apple Vision Pro, a lot of people are showing interest in learning about immersive technology.

I began learning XR design and Unity a while ago, and I want to share some tips and resources that have helped me get started with spatial/XR design. ✨Learn the design principles✨ - Apple has released a couple of videos sharing the principles of spatial design, which serve as a great starting point. I rarely share work matters here, but I feel so proud of the launch of Varjo XR-4 that I want to make one more post. ( @varjodotcom ) Whenever I share that I'm working in the XR / VR industry, people often first think about some old clumsy virtual reality experience they had 5 years ago in an amusement park and after that felt motion sickness. But what we do is a bit different. Because these headsets are in professional use, often in high-risk duty industries like the medical industry, the quality is something completely different. This latest headset series provides an image that is so sharp and crystal clear that it can be hard to tell the difference between which elements are virtual and which are real. That kind of experience is something mindblowing! Note: I do not get paid for this reel, this is not a collaboration and Varjo has not requested me to do this. I simply am proud and happy that something the team has worked so hard for is finally there. Crafting a product like this demands multiple people with different areas of expertise. To exceed the limits of what many thought was possible is an amazing achievement. Wherever the path leads in the future, this launch is a memory I will cherish.
