👁️ A retinal tear isn’t something to ignore!
Think of the retina as the wallpaper lining the inside of your eye. A retinal tear happens when that delicate tissue develops a small rip. If left untreated, it can allow fluid to slip underneath the retina, leading to a retinal detachment—a vision-threatening emergency.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for:
✨ Sudden flashes of light
✨ A shower of new floaters
✨ A curtain or shadow in your vision
✨ Sudden decrease in vision
👥 Who is at higher risk?
• High myopia (nearsightedness)
• Age-related posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)
• Eye trauma
• Previous retinal tear or retinal detachment
• Family history
• Prior eye surgery (especially cataract surgery)
🔍 How is it diagnosed?
A comprehensive dilated retinal exam is the gold standard. Your eye doctor may also use ultra-widefield retinal imaging (Optos), OCT, or an ultrasound when indicated to better evaluate the retina.
🩺 Common types of retinal tears:
• Horseshoe (flap) tears
• Operculated tears
• Atrophic holes
• Giant retinal tears
💡 The good news? Many retinal tears can be treated with laser before they progress to a retinal detachment. If you ever notice a sudden onset of flashes, floaters, or a curtain over your vision, seek an urgent dilated eye exam. Early detection can save your sight.
