Connecticut Public’s FOIA Series, pt 2: How to File a FOIA Request at Home In Connecticut, anyone (even residents of other states) can submit a FOIA request for records from the appropriate state government department. ⚠️ NOTE: Every state has its own rules and laws surrounding what records are available through FOIA and how to get them. The following is a guide for filing a Freedom of Information Act request with an agency in the state of Connecticut. First, know what records you want, and which government agency has them. Then, write a letter or email explaining what you need. Make sure to include your full name, contact information with mailing address, and a reasonable description of what you’re looking for. 📢 When sending an email or physical letter, you must write THIS IS A FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST somewhere in the document. Even a request written on a napkin will be considered valid as long as it is directly stated to be a Freedom of Information Act request. After you’ve submitted the request, the agency should get back to you within four business days to acknowledge receiving it. This response could be the records you’re looking for, a request for more information from you, a note to say they’re working on it, or a denial of your request which you can then appeal. We have also joined two amicus briefs opposing the Trump Administration’s illegal attempts to end birthright citizenship and terminate Temporary Protective Status for Venezuelans. We’ve signed on to a public comment letter opposing restrictions to Public Service Loan Forgiveness. We filed a brief in the Supreme Court opposing an end to humanitarian protections for immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. And we are leading a coalition in a brief challenging illegal cuts to federal funding that would end life saving medical research on everything from cancer and diabetes to Alzheimer's.
