Have you seen puffballs go PUFF?! These beloved round fungi are solid when young, but as they mature, they turn into a chamber that puffs out clouds of spores. This clever dispersal mechanism helps ensure the spores travel far when they get knocked by raindrops! One common species, which is featured in this video, is the pear-shaped puffball (Lycoperdon pyriforme), named for its tiny pear-like shape. NEAT NATURE . The forests can sometimes appear chaotic, but amoung the mess, neat little features and magical moments can be found. Just take it slow and venture into the deep (with a GPS or compass so you can find your way home of course). . Hope you all enjoy a great forest bathe soon. . OGs you may notice this is a reupload. Is this the spookiest Mushroom around? 👻🐙🎃 Devil’s fingers or the octopus stinkhorn fungus ~Clathrus archeri~ Is a foreign species travelled over from the southern hemisphere of the planet and is thought to have been first introduced to europe around ww1 by contaminated equipment, planes and maybe also wool material. Me and my mate becky discovered these in 2017 when out on the forest planes & we freaked out for a moment thinking we’d discovered alien life forms lol 👽. **No it's not edible for everyone asking. Though not currently proven to be toxic, it should be treated as suspect. No need to fear fungi, open yourself up to learning more about these #HygroscopicEarthstar #Astraeus. These are mycorrhizal mushrooms that often grow in association with oak. They are “gasteroid” meaning that their spore occur internally (like a puffball) instead of externally on gills. These mushrooms are adapted to variable weather, closing when it’s dry and opportunistically opening up when conditions and wet. They are covered in a hard outer layer (peridium) that unfurls when it gets wet, curling open revealing a powdery mass of brown spores. . Also known as Barometric Earthstars, Astraeus species are not true Earthstars (Geastrum). Instead they are related to bolete mushrooms, having evolved a similar shape and function independently from true Earthstars. Astraeus species are generally considered tough and inedible, but there are reports of people consuming them as food in Asia. As with many other long lasting fungi, scientists have been analyzing their chemical content with the hopes of discovering novel bioactive compounds like antibiotics that could have practical applications for human health. .
