Sometimes you gotta work that #9to5 ... But the #hay still needs to be delivered. Running a farm business has a lot of the same components as other businesses, including bookwork. But many farmers also work an off-farm job for supplemental income or benefits. With all the hustle of running a farm business, I sometimes forget to stop and smell the roses. But it’s moments like this that ground me and remind me why we chose this life. We wanted to live in the woods, grow food, work for ourselves, spend our days outside, and avoid going into town. And somehow, here we are. Dreams really do come true. To be profitable in any farm business, especially when cultivating cashcrops,it's very important that you maximize the land to its full capacity. A 100-acre farm with only a cashew cultivated or only oilpalm or cocoa cultivated might take 4 or 5 years for strong income to start flowing in. But what if you add cassava in between the empty spaces on that cashew farm or you intercrop the oilpalm,cocoa farm with plantain? The prospect of generating income from both crops is very high while incurring the same cost of production for both crops. For instance, intercropping cocoa and plantain or oilpalm and plantain. Not only do you make money from plantain every season, but you make money from cocoa year in year out for life.
