Fatbergs are clogging up the wastewater network all over Sydney... And one could even be growing in your pipes. But we can stop fatbergs from forming by: - Only putting water, soap and detergent down the sink 💧 - Only flushing the 3Ps: pee, poo and toilet paper 🚽 #sciencefacts #STEM #fatberg #sydneywater #paidpartnership
Fatbergs are a big problem in sewers across Victoria, costing ratepayers millions of dollars each year.   As part of the Geelong Design Week, a 6.8-metre-long artwork has been exhibited to educate the community about what should and should’t be flushed down the toilet. 🧻🚽   🎤: Natasha Schapova via ABC News Victoria    Personalise your news and stay in the know with the ABC NEWS app via the link in our bio.   #Fatberg #Toilet #ABCNewsVictoria
A record breaking fatberg weighing 30,000 kgs has been found in Perth’s sewer system. Fatbergs are caused by people flushing wipes and personal hygiene products down the toilet or tipping fats and oils down sink drains. The Water Corporation say they’re preventable. So what can we do? 📝 Kema Johnson 🎬 Veronica Buck #ABCNews #ABCNewsWA #Fatberg #WetWipes #Sewerage #CookingOil #Waste #Wastewater #WarOnWaste
Mmm… would you like some slimy fatbergs and antibiotic overload with your pristine Tasmanian waters? 😭 This is happening on every beach in our ecosystem. Right now. Decayed, diseased salmon bits from the completely unregulated fish farms. All beaches closed until further notice. No consequences for the fish farms. It’s so wrong. Please do not eat Tasmanian salmon. And tell yr local supermarket to stop stocking it. It is not clean and green. It is making our ecosystems sick, and our communities sick too. Don’t just take it from me, though - go check out: 🐟 @neighbours_of_fish_farming 🪸 @bobbrownfoundation 🐠 @offthetable_au who are all doing brilliant work speaking truth to power on this… Booker prize winner Richard Flanagan wrote a whole book in this too - ‘Toxic’ - look it up. Don’t eat Tasmanian salmon. *Especially* not as sushi. It’s killing our ecosystems and our communities, and it’s so full of antibiotics they can’t even keep the fish alive, even with daily doses! Yes, we need a just transition for fish farm workers coming out of this. That’s definitely doable. But an industry that is dedicated to poisoning ecosystems, waters, country and people, just to turn a profit (for offshore corporations) is just rank. Ugh. @huonsalmon and @tassalseafood - how do you live with yourselves?? You know this is rooted. You know it’s completely unsustainable. And yet. Yr willing to wreck country and communities for profit? I have no words 💔 #tasmania #brandtasmania #visittasmania #tasmaniansalmon #ecocide #offthetable #eatingsalmonkillingtasmania #lutruwita #melukerdeecountry
A stirring experiment: A wet wipe vs toilet paper. Only the one that breaks down in water should be flushed 🚽 . . #wetwipes #wetwipe #toilet #water #blockage #fatberg #fatbergs #wastewater
Fatbergs can form in our water renewal system when fats, oils and greases go down the sink or when "flushable" wipes and other hygiene waste go down the toilet. That may sound freaky, but we can all do our part to keep our water renewal system running smoothly! 🚽 Looking for a spooky, Halloween date night? Join us for an adults-only haunted water renewal tour on Thursday, October 30. Comment "Fatberg" to sign up!
Avoid the fatberg this holiday season! Don’t be tempted to take the shortcut of dumping grease down your drain as you work your way through those stacks of holiday dishes. Cooled grease can congeal and cause blockages in your own home pipes and dreaded fatbergs that can clog up sewer systems. Do a favor for future you (and your fellow taxpayers) by putting cooking grease in a heat-proof container and tossing it in the trash once it’s cool.
Wet wipes contain synthetic fibers such as polyester and polypropylene that do not break apart in water, so when they are flushed they can accumulate in sewage networks where they can form dense clogs known as fatbergs. During heavy rain, combined sewer systems release this mixture directly into waterways to prevent urban flooding, allowing wipes and their microplastic fibers to move through rivers or into the ocean where they fragment slowly, adsorb pollutants, and add to coastal and seabed contamination as well as ingestion risks for filter feeders. This is just one example of how single use plastic slips through our toilets, enters rivers during heavy rains, and reaches the ocean, which shows how urgently we need to rethink to reduce disposable products and invest in a circular economy solutions such as @oceanpackage ! Thanks @divearoundmadeira for the clean up dive.
This is an SOS: Save Our Sinks! 🙏 Every year, we spend up to $27 million clearing up to 20,000 blockages from our wastewater system 😱 Putting the wrong things down the sink like fats, cooking oil, milk and food scraps not only contributes to these ‘fatbergs’ in the network – they can also create serious blockages in your household pipes. To avoid an expensive plumbing bill, remember: only water, detergent and soap down the sink! 🧼💧 To learn more about why things like milk 🥛 shouldn’t go down the sink, and what to do instead, visit the link in our bio! 👀 #saveoursinks #plumbing #didyouknow #kitchenhacks #kitchenwaste #sydney #sydneywater
Did you know that milk contains fats and should never be poured down the sink? 🥛 Fats in products such as milk, sauces, condiments and oils can contribute to forming fatbergs which cause blockages in our plumbing and waste water networks. 🚫 Remember to #ThinkB4UPour @uisce_eireann
🚽✅ For flush sake, only toilet paper, pee and poo belong in the loo! Everything else goes in the 🗑️ bin ❌ The below items don’t break down in water. Instead, they tangle up with fats and other waste to form nasty fatbergs that block sewer pipes and pump stations: 🚫 Wet wipes (even if labelled ‘flushable’, ‘degradable’ or ‘biodegradable’) 🚫 Sanitary products 🚫 Facial tissues 🚫 Paper towels 🚫 Condoms 🚫 Nappies 🚫 Cloth or rags 🚫 Cotton buds 🫙 Did you know? We’ve kept jars of these ‘unflushables’ since September 2017 – and some of them look exactly the same today as the day they were put in. That’s how little they break down! 😬 Protect your loo and our sewerage systems too. Only flush toilet paper, pee and poo 🌊💙
