🚨California: 98 Earthquakes In 24 Hours | Major Fault Zone
Southern California’s live USGS map is showing 98 earthquakes in the last 24 hours in the region I am tracking, with many of those tiny tremors lining up along major fault trends. On the surface, 98 sounds extreme, but this is where the deeper story starts.
USGS estimates that Southern California averages around 10,000 earthquakes every year. That is roughly 25–30 quakes per day on average, and most of them are so small that nobody feels them. They exist only on seismograph screens. With better instruments and new detection methods, scientists have found that there are actually far more microquakes than the older catalogs ever showed. That means seeing dozens or even close to a hundred tiny events in one 24 hour window is not automatically a sign that “the Big One” is about to hit, but it is absolutely a sign that the fault network is active and slipping right now.
At the same time, this is not some random calm area. Southern California sits on a tangled plate boundary that includes the San Andreas, San Jacinto and many other faults capable of producing magnitude 7 and 8 earthquakes. History has already delivered events like the 1971 San Fernando, 1994 Northridge, 1992 Landers and 2019 Ridgecrest sequences. Those were all preceded by “just small quakes” on maps that looked a lot like today’s, until one of them suddenly was not small anymore.
I am monitoring the same USGS and Caltech feeds seismologists use, in real time. If this turns into a swarm, if we see a stronger mainshock, or if any official statements change, I will break it down for you within minutes, not days.

Today is the the start of the new season of @britishbakeoff
Even though it was 6 years ago I was in #bakeoff, it does feel like yesterday. I clearly remember the day of the first episode when I saw myself for the first time on the telly.
The excitement was sky high and so was the nervousness. I was worried about what will make it to the final edit, as we film a lot (for about 2 days). So, to all my new bakeoff family members, I know exactly how you are feeling.
But you are in good hands, the production team is known to bring the best out of us and to portray us in the best way possible. Enjoy it tonight xxx
It is #cake week. Hence, let’s celebrate this with this strawberry #Faultline cake.
The Faultline cakes are effective, they look proper showstoppers for any occasion. Even for my book cover, we went for a lemon Faultline cake.
These cakes are straightforward to do. You spread some buttercream/frosting in the middle of an iced cake to stick your choice of fruit/sprinkles/other decorations. Then apply loads on the top and bottom of the middle layer, and smooth. Finally finish by adorning that ‘fault-line’ with some metallic paint.
Lastly, A huge good luck to all my new bake off family members, you all are amazing. Just like the whole nation, I am eagerly waiting to see you tonight.
For our neighbours across the pond, it will be available from Friday onwards, Enjoy.

🚨 BREAKING: Something just shifted… and it’s not just the ground 🌎
On April 13th, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Fallon, Nevada—but that’s not even the wildest part…
A witness named Louie captured footage of what looks like a massive, mile-long crack splitting through the fault line … and even crazier… you can see smoke rising from it.
This isn’t just a small fracture… this looks deep. Like something underneath is… moving.
So now the question is—
Is this just natural seismic activity…
or is something bigger happening beneath the surface?
👀 Watch closely… and tell me what YOU think.

What you're seeing is a fault rupture, the moment built-up stress along a fault line finally gives way during an earthquake, forcing the ground on either side to shift and, in dramatic cases like this, visibly tear open at the surface.
This one happened during the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025.
The movement here is horizontal — known as strike-slip — where the two sides of the fault slide past each other rather than up or down.

There’s a unique piece of geology that many walk by near Walter Pierce Park along Adams Mill Road NW. Protected with a fence since the 1920s is an overthrust fault where one piece of the earth is pushed on top of another. One layer represents the Piedmont region and the other the Atlantic Coastal Plain.

DOES THE ANDALUSIAN GOVERNMENT KNOW SOMETHING WHAT WE DON'T?!
IS THERE A BIGGER EARTHQUAKE ON THE WAY?

What caused Friday’s earthquake in NJ? 🤷♀️ This 200 million year old crack running across the state could have something to do with it.

A video recorded in Myanmar shows an exceptionally rare moment: the ground itself tearing and shifting along an active tectonic fault. Footage of surface rupture happening in real time is extremely uncommon, since most fault movement is documented only through instruments or after the event. Tectonic faults are cracks in Earth’s crust where massive rock blocks move relative to each other, driven by the slow motion of tectonic plates. Over time, stress builds as the plates grind past one another until the rock suddenly breaks, releasing energy as an earthquake. Capturing this process on camera provides valuable scientific evidence, allowing researchers to directly observe crustal deformation, refine geological models, and improve predictions of earthquake hazards and risk.

OMG! I finally made a fault line cake! Lol, I’m still on the fence about how I feel about this style—but once I got it into my head that I had to make a fruity pebbles-inspired cake, it just felt like the direction I had to go in with it. The whole apartment now smells like fruity pebbles. Happy Saturday!
