Same Product. Completely Different Finish. 😳
As decorative finishes become more popular, the difference between quality craftsmanship and poor application becomes easier to spot.
At Faux Real Painting, we know that the technique behind a finish matters just as much as the product itself.
Uneven coats, excessive roughness, and inconsistent textures can completely change the final result. Some clients prefer bold movement and texture, while others want a smooth, subtle concrete-inspired look.
That's why understanding the client's vision and presenting physical samples BEFORE starting is so important.
The biggest mistake? Assuming the client wants the same finish you have in mind. That miscommunication can lead to costly rework and thousands of dollars in unnecessary expenses. 💸

Faux burl finishes like this became popular in the mid 1800s to the early 1900s as a way to mimic the intricate patterns of rare, expensive woods like walnut burl. Craftsmen created these by hand using techniques like stippling to create texture, sponging to add organic patterns, and glazing to layer depth and color. The artistry required incredible skill, making these finishes a true work of art.
Today, these handcrafted faux finishes are rare, and their historical significance adds unique value. Unlike modern mass-produced furniture, each faux finish was entirely one-of-a-kind. They offer a glimpse into the ingenuity of the past and the effort it took to create beauty with limited resources.
When restoring or cleaning furniture with a faux finish, preserving the painted surface is key. Avoid abrasive cleaners or sanding, as they can damage the finish. Instead, use a mild wood-safe cleaner or a restorative product to bring out its original shine without removing the history. Here, we are using @howard_products

If the faux finish is worn or damaged, you can try to touch up the pattern using fine brushes, oil paints, or acrylics to replicate the look. Seal the surface with a matte or satin topcoat to stabilize it. If you’re not comfortable with these techniques, consider seeking a professional to help preserve the original design.
Antique faux finishes like this aren’t just furniture—they’re pieces of history worth protecting. Would you have guessed this wasn’t real burl wood?

When paint just isn’t enough… ✨
Layers of hand-applied and combed texture, metal leaf gilding, and antiquing come together to create a finish that feels rich, dimensional, and beautifully aged.
The combination of texture and gilding catches the light differently throughout the day, while the antiquing settles into every detail, bringing out the depth and character of the finish.
Because sometimes the walls should be the artwork.

The Art of Blending | Faux Finish Restoration
We’re currently working on a challenging interior faux finish restoration project using @meodedpaint Velature Glaze.
For this project, I invited Hernán from @hjp_painting_inc to join us. He’s a talented craftsman, and it’s always a pleasure working alongside someone who shares the same dedication to quality workmanship.
With several areas needing attention due to previous repairs, patches, and inconsistencies in the existing finish, our focus is on carefully blending everything together while preserving the original character of the walls.
A little teamwork, a lot of patience, and some good craftsmanship.
More progress to come!

I have been procrastinating about making this video or not for a long time.
In this video I’m expressing a little bit of a concern around this product called “Liquid Metal”
The product itself is a great faux finish and after taking this great class with @verometalna I was really impressed to see how close to real metal it looked.
And for some applications I think this product is amazing.
And as I said in the video I’m certified to use it and I would totally do it if the client requested it and I couldn’t do it in real metal.
My concern is the fact that most people using it are not being transparent about it, they will sell it as solid brass, bronze, copper without telling you that you actually getting a spray on epoxy with metal powder.
And the reason why I’m making this video is to express a concern about that transparency.
All the sudden you see people making all kind of furniture, art, bath tub, entire walls coated with this product selling it as solid metal and as someone who has been dedicated his life working with the real material it makes me a little mad/worried to see that.
I just needed to express it.
Not trying to attack anybody personally or the product itself but more the marketing around it.
Some of the people I met at that class are actually the best people I have met in a long time and are extremely talented!
And if that product interests you I would be more than happy to put you in contact with Robert who is a master and teach that class!
