The performance at the FMF (Film Music Festival) 2016 of the How To Train Your Dragon suite is widely considered the “definitive” live version of John Powell’s work. An interesting fact is that while Powell was nominated for Best Original Score in 2011, he famously lost to The Social Network.
While Trent Reznor’s score was groundbreaking, many film score enthusiasts (especially by 2026) view Powell’s loss as one of the biggest “Academy robberies” in history.
Powell used a unique blend of Scottish bagpipes, Irish whistles, and a massive orchestral brass section to create a sonic landscape that felt both ancient and futuristic.

Hans Zimmer is one of the most influential film composers in cinema history, known for shaping how modern movies sound and feel. His work combines orchestral music with electronic elements, creating scores that are emotional, immersive, and closely tied to the storytelling. Rather than staying in the background, Zimmer’s music often drives the mood of a scene, making the sound an essential part of the cinematic experience.
Over decades, Hans Zimmer has composed music for some of the most recognizable films in Hollywood, helping define genres from animation to science fiction and epic drama. His scores are widely studied, frequently imitated, and deeply associated with the identity of the films he works on, which is why he is often regarded as one of the most important composers in film history.

Released in 2007 on Graduation, Kanye West’s Flashing Lights stands as one of his most meticulously arranged records, built around a sweeping string composition co produced with Eric Hudson and anchored by Dwele’s hook, creating a cinematic contrast between opulence and paranoia that matched the album’s stadium scale ambition. An alternate intro version circulated among fans through live performances and early demo leaks, featuring a longer orchestral swell before the drums drop, allowing the strings to breathe and heightening the tension before the beat fully kicks in. That extended opening was notably used during certain Glow in the Dark Tour arrangements, where Kanye would let the strings play out to amplify the dramatic entrance, reinforcing how central the orchestration was to the record’s identity. The final album cut trims that intro for a sharper radio ready impact, but the alternate version highlights the song’s original structure as a slow build spectacle rather than an immediate hit, showcasing how Graduation balanced pop accessibility with grand, almost film score level production detail.

Call it Sunday Outta-Tune-Piano-Vamping on an oldie but favorite chord progression from a song I wrote in 2002. Was it pop? Classical? I had no idea…
(I now I know it was New Age, the genre that pulls from alllllll different genres, that experiments, that calls back, that invites forward…)
The song is called Proof. Also my first time writing for live strings for my own music and not a film score. Fun times experimenting as a professional composer!
